Wayne Mardle looks into his crystal ball to test how the 2019 World Grand Prix will play out.
Through the years, it has always been that sort of came out of nowhere, you can sort of say the great players do reach the final, or even the stages. Even with the Gurney-Whitlock closing. While they werent expected to reach the final and you might see the quality for it to be won by Daryl Gurney gets through someplace.
Michael van Gerwen is by far the best player in the world, even if he is off, which he has been for chunks of this year. His stats are better than anybody else. Hes won this four times. He knows how to win it. He has won it in14,16,18, therefore he can not acquire it, he has to win it 20!
Hes brilliant in shirts, and hes very good at coming down into the 60. I am still surprised that he has not struck on a nine-darter within this event. I truly find him I truly do.
However, I think some of them need to start thinking a little more. What I mean is if that overlooks, and Michael will go for shirts, he can go 18s or 32, but thats his usual path. Where their starting eludes them, we see some of these , and they are looking around the board for a thing they fancy. You have got T19 in ordinary start… that they know what theyre going to do until they measure up to the plank. But double beginning just seems alien to them, because it is just annually.
Going back into Rob Cross, hes never won a game. Hes only played in it before he was world champ and has been third seed this past year.
He definitely does not feel comfortable. When you receive the world number two uneasy using a format, because he does not possess the regular or rhythm, you have got to thinkright, Ive got to create certain that doesnt occur to me.
But because there are only eight seeds in this, is it the worst attraction? number nine, mensur Suljovic. That is the most dreadful draw that I think Ive seen in a long time.
Its the only event since the Worlds thats set-play, and it happens to be. The players arent used to set-play. Set-play is loved by them, however they are not utilised to it. Its all leg-play. What they do – the Tour, the Pro Tour, that the Premier League the Matchplay. Everything aside from the Worlds is leg-play.
Thus more tension is heaped on, because,Its the deciding leg of the set. This is large, this is huge. Theyve missed. Ive got to get this. Youre simply not relaxed because its double-in, double-out, also since it is set-play. It simply adds to the drama. Its drama-ridden.
I have been on the receiving end, and this is only one of these events and I have given it all out. All of a sudden, your first dart starts to discover that double and the entire game looks straightforward, as you reach a double click, and your opponent is around 250. You get to a double your competitor is really on 193. Youre not doing everything right, but they are simply not getting away. You find yourself under no stress.
The opposite side of this is that your opponent just can not deal.
You hit doubles or else they strike doubles using a regularity of state 40-45 percent. Therefore you expect them to get each time inside the first three or 2 darts away. It is just a different creature. This makes you panic. People who acquire this are people who do the ideal thing at the perfect time, like everyone does, however, also those that are just not panicking. You cant panic in this arrangement. Youre able to get away with it on 501, if its old college, as its possible to kick off with 85, your competition kicks off with 60, youre still a bit better, even in case youve thrown a couple of iffy darts. You throw a few darts that are iffy to get off, it saps your confidence big time. Horrible format!
We keep mentioning it it is getting away, and it is finishing. However, its the event of the year that destroys the rhythm of this player. So the players that… theyre speedsters or they will suit each other when they might. I think that all goes out the window.
I keep taking a look at this Lewis-Jermaine Wattimena game. That needs to be somewhat pacey, but I can envision this becoming a event. Adrian doesnt understand what he is doing. Jermaine only wants to get on with it. But with double-start, you can not simply get on with it. You have got to think about it.
Evans, hes got to do this. Dimitri van den Bergh. Jermaine Wattimena. They have got to have routines, and know how these shotsre breaking down. Its vitally important with this. It is not a normal game.
Hell return on it fondly because he has won it four times. Never and if he had won it in 2012 won it , then it would be another story. But hes won four days to it, also been defeated in a final after by Robert Thornton.
Michael understands that this format suits him, and he knows he is among the very best, maybe not the very best double-hitter on Earth. Hes up there in every statistic youll be able to pull out. Not only that, but hes the most persistent. Hes proven that and is now a three time world champ. He has made to thinkwell they have got to beat on me.
I was only looking at the stats from this past year. He ought to have got beaten by Peter Wright. I remember it vividly, it was 2-2 in sets. The fifth place was won by michael after Peter needed a dart to win, and I said that is it now, he will relax and perform Michael van Gerwen. You cant afford to not take your opportunities when Van Gerwen is under par. He had been nominated for five sets under 80, and he was up. That is the gap between van Gerwen and also lots of others – its how good he is at the right time when hes playing poorly. I think hes the man. I dont know exactly what it is, I just think he is putting himself under pressure that is too much , too frequently. He knows the way to unwind and he has to relax.
As you understand, Im not a fence-sitter. But no matter what result, I could totally see it since its the very best of three, because its a double-start, you really end up considering names, [wondering] could he achieve the final?
I examine a half and think, can he reach the semi-final? Looking at some of the games when you take a look at averages its ridiculous. They mean absolutely nothing.
Look at Rob Cross lure. Its horrible. Hes got Mensur from the first round. When he wins that hes probably got Peter Wright if he wins, hes got Ratajski or even Durrant. Its awful. Its totally awful. Thats a complete stinker as draws go, although Ive not mastered Rob.
I presume……. Im going to state MVG will perform with with Ian White or even Michael Smith from the semi-final. Ive said it year. But its come to the stage where Ian White is one of the greatest players in the world on a daily basis, but hes got to be one of the finest from the world on a large stage.
Im a backer of Michael Smith. I think hes got the match and when he starts hitting that tops, I can see him running riot. I could see him beating Van Gerwen when he gets into the semi-finals. I can not view Whitlock beating on him.
Joe Cullen along with Ian Whites winner, I think that would be Ian White by the way. But Ian White on the stage? He let it go and had been in a position that is winning back.
The way I am looking to win it, but I have a feeling the winner of Price vs Chizzy, I think the final is reached by the winner of the game in the half.
You have got Gurney in the marketplace and hes a winner however Price and Chizzys winner, they have to think the winner of Bunting and Clayton are still there for the taking, that puts them. It is not a given that Gurney beats Aspinall or even Noppert, whos throwing some great stuff I believe Price and Chizzy are enjoying darts that are world class to day. Theyre playing well.
Im going for Chizzy or Price to achieve the last. For me personally it is Chisnall or Price to reach the semis, and 2 from any three on the top [half], be it White, Smith or van Gerwen.
