Wayne Mardle looks into his crystal ball to test how the 2019 World Grand Prix will play out.
Through the years, its always been, aside from a Brendan Dolan which sort of came from nowhere, you can say that the good players do reach the phases, or the final. In Spite of the Gurney-Whitlock final. While they were not predicted to achieve the last and for it to be won by Daryl Gurney, you might observe the quality gets through somewhere.
Michael van Gerwen is definitely the best player in the world, even if he is off, which he has been for chunks of the season. His stats are better than anyone else. He has won this four occasions. He also knows how to win it. He has won it 14,16,18, therefore it cant be won by him, he must win it in20!
He is brilliant at tops, and hes very good at coming into the 60. I am still amazed that he has not hit a nine-darter in this function. I find him I truly do.
But I think a few of these need to start thinking a bit more. What I mean is how Michael will opt for tops, and if that misses, he may move 32 or 18s, however, that is his route. We see a number of them, in which their starting eludes them, and they are looking round the board for a thing they fancy. You have got T19 in ordinary start… they know what theyre going to do before they measure up to the plank. But double beginning just seems alien to them, as it is only once a year.
Hes never won a match. Until he was world champ and was seed last year, he played it twice.
He definitely doesnt feel comfortable. When you have the entire number two uneasy with a format, since he does not have the routine or rhythm, then you have got to believeright, I have got to make sure that doesnt happen to me.
However, since there are only eight seeds in this, can it be that the worst attraction? number nine, mensur Suljovic. That is the most draw that I believe Ive seen in a long time.
It is the only event since the Worlds that is set-play, and it happens to be double-start as well. The players arent utilised to set-play. Set-play is loved by them, but theyre not utilised to it. It is all leg-play. Everything they do – in the Matchplay, the Tour the Premier League, the World Series occasions. Everything apart from the Worlds is leg-play.
So more pressure is heaped on, as,Its the deciding leg of this group. That is large, this is huge. Right, theyve missed. I have got to find this. You are simply not relaxed because it is set-play, also because it is double-in, double-out. It adds to the drama. It is drama-ridden.
This is only one of these occasions, and Ive been on the receiving end and Ive handed all out it. All of a sudden, your first dart starts to find that double and the whole game appears to be simple, since you reach a double click sided, and your opponent is on 250. You reach a double again, your competitor is about 193. Youre not doing everything right, but they are simply not getting off. You find yourself under no stress.
The opposite side of that is that your opponent just can not deal.
You struck they or doubles strike doubles with a regularity of say 40-45 percent. Therefore you expect them to get away every moment. It is only a different creature. It causes you to panic. Those who acquire this are individuals that do the right thing at the perfect time, like everybody does, but also those that are just not panicking. You cannot panic within this arrangement. Youre able to get away with it on 501, if it is old school, as its possible to kick off with 85, your competition kicks off using 60, you are still a bit better, even in the event youve thrown a couple of iffy darts. You throw a few darts that are iffy to get off, it saps your confidence big time. Horrible format!
We keep mentioning it it is getting away, and its finishing. But its the only real event of the whole year that destroys the rhythm of the participant. So the players that… they are speedsters or theyll suit each other if they might. I simply feel that all goes out the window.
I keep taking a look at the Lewis-Jermaine Wattimena game. I can envision it turned into a affair, although that ought to be a bit pacey. Adrian simply doesnt understand what he is doing at the moment. Jermaine wants to get on with it. However, with it, you can not simply get on with double-start. Youve got to think about doing it.
Ricky Evans, he has got to do this. Dimitri van den Bergh. Jermaine Wattimena. They have got to have patterns, and know how theyre breaking down these shots. It is vitally important with this. Its not a game that is normal.
Hell return on it fondly because hes won four times to it. If he won it again and never had won it, then it would be a different story. But he has won it four times, and been beaten in a final after by Robert Thornton.
Michael understands that this format suits him, and he understands he is among the best, if not the best double-hitter around Earth. He is up there in each statistic youll be able to pull out. In addition to that, but hes the most persistent. Hes demonstrated that and is a 3 time world champ. He has got to thinkwell they have got to beat on me.
I just looked at the stats from this past year. He should have got beaten by Peter Wright. I recall it it was 2-2 in places. That I said thats it today, and michael won the fifth place after Peter needed a dart to triumph, hell relax and play like Michael van Gerwen. When Van Gerwen is under par, you cant afford not to take your chances. He had been nominated for five sets, and he was up. Thats the difference between van Gerwen and also lots of others – it is how good he is in the time when hes playing poorly. I think he is the guy. I really dont know what it was, I simply think hes placing himself under pressure that is a lot of . He knows the way to unwind and hes got to relax.
As you know, Im not a fence-sitter. But regardless of what outcome, since its the best of three I can totally see it, because it is a double-start, you actually end up considering names, [wondering] can he attain the closing?
I think and consider a half, can he reach the semi-final? Looking at a number of the matches from this past year, should you take a look at averages its ridiculous. They mean nothing.
Check out Rob Cross lure. Its horrible. He has Mensur in the first round. When he wins, hes got Ratajski or Durrant, when he wins hes probably got Peter Wright. It is awful. It is absolutely awful. That is an absolute stinker as pulls go, although Ive not mastered Rob.
I believe……. I will say MVG will play with Michael Smith or Ian White from the semi-final. Ive said it year after year approximately Michael Smith. But its come to the point at which Ian White is now one of the greatest players in the world on a daily basis, but hes got to be among the best in the entire world on a platform.
I am a backer of Michael Smith. I think hes got the match and I can see him running riot when he begins hitting on that tops. I could see him beating Van Gerwen if he gets into the semi-finals. I cant watch Whitlock beating him.
The winner of Joe Cullen and also Ian White, I Believe that would be Ian White by the way. But Ian White to the stage? The Matchplay again he was in a winning position and let it goback.
The way I am taking a look at the protagonists to win it, but Ive got a feeling that the winner of Price vs Chizzy, I think that the winner of the game reaches the closing in the bottom half.
You have got Gurney in there and he is a winner but the winner of Chizzy and Cost, they have to believe the winner of Bunting and Clayton are still there for the shooting, which puts them in the quarter-finals. It is not a given that Gurney defeats Noppert or even Aspinall, who is throwing some things I believe Chizzy and Price and world-class darts are playing to day. Theyre playing well.
Im going for Chizzy or Price to reach the last. For me its Chisnall or Price to get to the semis, and two out of any three on the top [half], make it Smith, White or van Gerwen.
