Ahead of creating his European Tour debut at the BMW PGA Championship viktor Hovland has set his sights on breaking into Europe’s Ryder Cup team.
This week’s event in Wentworth marks the beginning of a qualifying effort to secure a spot at the group of Padraig Harrington with Hovland playing alongside the captain for the first two rounds of Europe, for the 2020 competition.
Hovland has created a smooth transition to professional golf after a stellar amateur career, posting top-20 finishes in five of his last six PGA Tour begins and procuring his card via the Korn Ferry Tour Finalstogether with the Norwegian now targeting a spot in Europe’s group for Whistling Straits.
“That would mean everything to become part of the group,” Hovland said. “I love college golf so much, even though professional golf is really cool, I still think about the times we had in school.
“There is nothing better than winning a championship for a group, and hopefully 1 day I’ll be part of a winning Ryder Cup team.
“I shot a few weeks off a couple of weeks before, and I got a little rusty, but it was nice to have a break in and recharge the batteries. I understand what I’ve got and that’s kind of the thing. I’d love to enhance a good deal of stuff, but it is exactly what it is.”
Jon Rahm arrives at the Rolex Series event bid to become also the first since Miguel Angel Jimenez success and the tournament’s fourth largest winner in 2008.
Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal are the other success stories at Wentworth, with Rahm seeking to enroll another win of the year and join that exclusive club.
“Whenever I can combine or I can have my title connect Spanish golf course, it’d be amazing,” Rahm said. “I’ve been fortunate enough to perform it at the Eastern Open, that meant a lot to me, my very first win at the European Tour.
“To take action here, the flagship event, a championship a lot of individuals look ahead, it’d be wonderful to be the fourth person to arrive and add it to get Spanish golfclubs.
“Anytime I can combine the likes of two major champions and potentially the most fascinating man in golf, I would be really happy and very jaded by it.”
