Oprah Winfrey is a big mover on Betfair’s 2020 election niches and currently rated Donald Trump’s closest rival. Paul Krishnamurty considers her chance and looks at another five actors bringing speculation…
It was inevitable once Donald Trump had changed the match – gambling an a US Presidential Election could never be the same again. The fields are no more only Republican and Democrat politicians however a wide variety of characters from popular culture and business.
At this early stage at least, celebrities will be the candidates that bettors appear most interested in backing. With a single barnstorming Golden Globes address, Oprah Winfrey is already rated Trump’s closest competition for 2020.
Oprah Winfrey, Newest Odds: 13
The response to Oprah’s speech shows precisely why actors increasingly have the edge. She’s garnered more conversation in three days than anyone else among the crowded Democratic Nominee field have managed in annually. Trump won the primary by monopolising media coverage and Oprah would likely have the exact same effect.
Their highly positive reaction indicates notable Democrat voices are taking this seriously. This is a celebration still traumatised by defeat and on course for a remarkably divisive primary involving a huge field – precisely what plunged their competitions into chaos. They’ve no apparent leader or even front-runner. To many, Oprah would be the panacea. A unifying figure that connects with parts of the electorate nobody else could attain and, while additionally a billionaire celebrity, the antithesis of Trump.
It’s a safe bet that big Democrat donors and strategists have been sketching out plans since her Golden Globes speech. There’ll be a number of voices trying to persuade her and betting interest will last until she categorically declares no intention to operate. I can not see her Next President chances getting much larger than the current 13.00 in the short-term given the inevitable speculation. Oprah v Trump is beyond the wildest dreams of media executives.
A less safe bet is that she really runs. While Winfrey is naturally flattered by the attention and jumped to consider it, she’s said never. Running for president is a gruelling experience, demanding total commitment. The primaries alone are a marathon. Politics necessarily involves taking sides and alienating people. Every word you’ve ever uttered in people will be pored over. Would somebody of her elevated status want to risk the brand built over a life?
Mark Zuckerberg Odds: 36
The Facebook creator’s political aspirations have long been a subject of speculation and why not? When you have achieved what Zuckerberg has at 33, future aspirations are bound to be set very large. He’s obviously got plenty to offer in public life and is going to be a prominent figure for decades. Whether he’s ready for a political career, let alone win the presidency, at this young age is just another issue. Plus Facebook’s function at the weaponisation of bogus news in recent elections is a temporary drawback.
