Defending champion Naomi Osaka has been knocked from the US Open, losing 7-5 6-4 on Monday into the Belinda Bencic at the previous 16 of Switzerland.
Osaka, 21, has been broken in the opening set and then again in the fifth game of the second at Flushing Meadows.
It means the participant will lose her world number one ranking to come back to the place.
For Bencic, 22, it is her second appearance in the quarter-finals.
She made the last eight in 2014 and will now play Croatia’s Donna Vekic after the 23rd seed defeat Germany’s 26th seed Julia Goerges 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 6-3 in a match which lasted two hours 42 minutes Louis Armstrong Stadium.
“I was so excited to return on the court, the obstacle can’t be bigger – Naomi Osaka is a terrific player and won the US Open last year,” said Bencic. “I needed to be on top of the game and I am really delighted with how I played.
“She’s a great deal of power, I was just hoping to play it a little bit like chess, anticipate and earn a tactic on the court”
Osaka, who beat Serena Williams in last year for her Grand Slam title, had to save two break points to avoid going down 3-0 and started off as she lost her serve at the first chance .
She fought again with a fracture before Bencic served out the collection and then took the decisive break in the game.
In the second group, an Osaka fault talented Bencic the player as well as another break took the last game of the game to love.
Osaka became the world number one, a position she held before June until Barty took over, after winning the Australian Open in January for the Grand Slam.
Osaka returned to the eight weeks despite losing into the Qiang Wang of China in the last 16 on Sunday but Barty will end up number one again.
