Tottenham striker Troy Parrott impressed for Republic of Ireland U21s but Mick McCarthy admits he will have to play first-team football for Spurs to push his way into the country side.
Parrott scored the winner Friday, before returning the bench to score twice on Tuesday night.
The 17-year-old has been an essential portion of Tottenham’s pre-season excursion Juventus and Bayern Munich and is Spurs’ recognized striker supporting Harry Kane.
However, McCarthy insists Parrott wants Tottenham first-team action before he can be selected for Ireland’s old side, stating:”Get from the very first team.
“You do realize the U21s and also the U23s where he is playing with is far-removed from where we’re playing, don’t you? There’s a difference.
“Should I think he’s right, I will take him. We are going to try and get him observed. It’s interesting – when he had not come on and scored his objectives, I wonder what would the questions have been had he not come on, since Stephen’s not played with with him?
“If somebody makes you a replacement and you come on a do this, deliver that sort of functionality, that is what it is about. He’s a good kid and I’m excited by him.”
He is in line to make his debut at the Carabao Cup from Colchester United in September although Parrott hasn’t appeared for Spurs from the Premier League this season.
The child is set to advance at national level together with his present director Stephen Kenny stepping up to handle the senior side following their Euro 2020 effort, which McCarthy states must make it possible for a natural progression from youth level.
McCarthy stated:”You are all talking about these coming into the first team. After he [Kenny] gets the job – and it won’t be that now – he will be perfectly placed.
“In the meantime, it’s me that’s come and may have taken the backlash had drawn in Gibraltar or dropped in Gibraltar, and that has shielded him .
“Hopefully we qualify, get to the Euros and it’ll be seen as a great choice to have achieved exactly what we did.”
