The captaincy characteristics of kane Williamson mean he will be during The Hundred Draft in high demand, says Manchester Originals head trainer Simon Katich.
New Zealand skipper Williamson includes a strike-rate of 122 in Twenty20 international cricket – a format that’s viewed because his weakest – considerably below that of West Indies’ Chris Gayle (143) and Australia’s David Warner (140).
While Gayle and Warner will take a reserve price of 125k at Sunday’s draft, combined with Australia skipper Steve Smith (strike-rate 122), Williamson has positioned himself at the 100k bracket which means he will be available for 2, rather than 1 round of picks.
Katich told Sky Sports News that”without doubt” there is space for a batsman of Williamson’s character from the 100-ball contest, which gets underway at July 2020.
“These men add more than their batting – Kane Williamson and Steve Smith in particular,” said the former Australian batsman.
“They are fantastic leaders and obviously have an impact on the rest of the team and tactically they’re quite good too.
“Williamson nearly led New Zealand for their first World Cup so, from this perspective, he will be in demand I would have thought.
“Gayle is a challenging one because his form in the past few years has been exceptional, especially in the IPL and a number of the other franchise tournaments he’s played .
“But everybody has to weigh it up and find out what matches the balance of the team the very best and whether he’s got a role to play.
“He’s up there with AB de Villiers as probably the greatest ever T20 batsman, so it’s going to be interesting to check whether teams want him or not.”
While a draft was hosted by the ECB earlier this week, by which members of the media road-tested technology and the laptops to be used for the actual thing at Sky Studios on 40, gayle was not picked.
Williamson was created their second choice to complement a order already boasting volatile hitters by sky Sports Tom Banton Jonny Bairstow along with Colin Ingram.
Katich acknowledged that finding the correct balance across the squad will be among the challenges come Sunday’s draft.
“If you are spending high dollar you anticipate those men to be game-changers because they’re very few and far between but they play roles where they are going to have a really big opportunity to impact the sport,” he explained.
“At a draft like this there will be some interesting strategies because using three abroad selections there’s the opportunity to contract them in any stage of this draft, so it does not necessarily need to be in the top.
“It will be interesting to find out the way the game along with the structure evolves since an innings with 20 chunks less than T20 can have a different effect on the batsman’s mindset and the way they have to begin structuring their innings.
“Bowlers are going to be under stress also earlier in their charms because there are fewer chunks to get on with it”
‘The Hundred Draft -‘ Live’ will be shown on Sunday on Sky Sports Cricket, Sky One Main Event & from 7pm.
It will also be accessible via Sky Sports’ Facebook and YouTube channels, in addition to dwell on the Sky Sports app and streamed on skysports.com.
