Florida has Tennessee’s amount for a decade-plus, but the No. 9 Gators would probably be with their starting quarterback when they sponsor the Vols on Saturday.
Tennessee vs. Florida used to be one of the SEC’s best rivalries but those days are pretty much long gone today since the Vols program has fallen on such hard times in recent years and they have been dominated in this series for some time. Florida has just 1 loss in the previous 14 meetings, arriving in Knoxville, 38-28, when the Gators were ranked 19th and Tennessee 14th.
Last year, Florida gathered to a 47-21 street win when both were unranked (UF hasn’t dropped in eight assembly when it’s rated and UT is not ). Feleipe Franks threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score. It turned over six times, with all four of these to 24 Gators points. The 47 points were Florida’s most. UT price itself by glancing a chunk out of the end zone for a 22, a touchdown and also permitted a security. Jarrett Guarantano went 7 of 18 for 164 yards with a fumble and two interceptions.
No coach is on a hotter seat in the SEC right now compared to the Jeremy Pruitt of Tennessee. The Vols were embarrassed in their first two matches at home, losing 38-30 to BYU into Georgia State and also 29-26 in overtime. This was Tennessee’s first 0-2 start since 1988.
Pruitt’s team got its first win over FCS brother Chattanooga. Guarantano tried only eight passes and completed seven for 142 yards and a career-high three touchdowns (all from the first half). Jauan Jennings is the first Vol with a TD catch in each of the initial three games because Josh Malone in 2016 and caught a TD pass. Three Vols produced their first career begins: Darnell Wright (true freshman) at right guard, K’Rojhn Calbert (redshirt sophomore) at right tackle and Kenneth George Jr. (redshirt junior) in cornerback. This was UT straight triumph over an opponent that is in-state.
When the Vols get punked here, expect more and more chit chat about the faculty chasing Ohio State and former Gators head coach Urban Meyer, doing work for Fox TV. Meyer recently said he had been”shocked” in the condition of the Tennessee app but it’s a”Top 10″ project in the country.
While this is Tennessee’s first road game of this year, UF won 29-21 at Kentucky to find payback for last year’s home upset reduction and had. The Gators trailed for most of the game, but went on a 19-0 run late to come back and win. Quarterback Kyle Trask directed UF to three touchdown drives.
Since Franks suffered a ankle injury that has ended his 15, trask was playing. He was carted off when Franks was discontinued for no gain on fourth-and-1 at the Kentucky 38. Franks had been 12-for-17 for 147 yards and a touchdown before the injury. Trask, a junior from Texas, was 9-for-13 for 126 yards in his place. UF played with Kentucky without receiver Kadarius Toney, that won’t move this week, either, and best cornerback C.J. Henderson. He could reunite vs. the Vols.
Coach Dan Mullen says that he intends to play with both Trask and redshirt freshman Emory Jones heading forward. Jones believed the team’s quarterback of the future and is a quarterback, Even though Franks is much more of a pocket passer. Mullen planned to play Jones a few against UK also but changed his mind.
“Kyle was sort of sexy,” Mullen said during his postgame press conference. “Thus, we kind of stuck with that. I had a couple of things to get Emory in, but we just sort of stuck with Kyle because he had been rolling.”
Florida has won seven games overall. It also has scored at least 24 points in all those, the longest such streak since a 24-game stretch which began with a 28-24 loss to LSU on Oct. 6, 2007, and was snapped with a 23-13 win over Tennessee on Sept. 19, 2009. UF is 4-0 beneath Mullen in games.
