Request a scout, coach or participant to compare No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray to a NFL QB and a single instant response generally comes back: Russell Wilson.
When it’s elusiveness, arm strength, deep-ball accuracy, baseball background or the apparent height comparison, Wilson is the most frequent name conjured for Murray. The hype is a whole lot to live up to considering Wilson’s achievement.
After an offseason of workouts, 1 man who was able to block to the Seattle Seahawks signal-caller and all the comparisons between Murray and Wilson agree.
“I see hundreds of similarities,” fresh Cardinals guard J.R. Sweezy stated when asked about the Murray-Wilson comparison, via Josh Weinfuss of ESPN. “I always say, we must see this guy really play. I think he is going to be just fine. But only to be compared to Russell Wilson is a massive compliment.
“He’s going to back this up. I love that he’s getting compared to everything and him . He’s going to be great”
Murray entered offseason workouts with sky-high expectations after being drafted No. 1 overall into Kliff Kingsbury’s system in Arizona. The combination of pass-heavy sets, with Murray’s ability to scramble out of stress, makes a perfect match on paper.
Murray matched the hype, according to mates, as we hit the summertime before training camp.
“Everything that I heard, he has lived around,” guard Justin Pugh said. “And I’ve heard a great deal of good things, therefore it has been great so far.”
Murray’s teammates praised him everything out of his playbook acumen, fluidity in the pocket, speed, accuracy and leadership. All traits that Wilson boasted as a passer.
“He is cool, calm, collected, sleek,” Sweezy said of Murray. “Create a mistake, return, correct it. He’s on it, frankly.”
It’s a sign that Murray’s teammates provide broad reviews of the rookie quarterback. Opposite or tentative assessments would portend trouble for a rebuilding franchise that dumped one first-round QB to have a swing on Murray.
At precisely the same time, we have just seen football in shorts. Murray is going to have a good deal more to process and establish after the pads are on in training camp and the preseason starts in late July.
“He’s shown nothing but great leadership and hard work and doing the perfect thing,” Pugh said. “When we get the pads , we will get a lot more of a feel for each other, and I’m looking forward to that.”
