Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel claims he is”not concerned” about his form after he wrecked his Italian Grand Prix using a spin and crash.
Vettel hit once rejoining following a spin out of place on lap six Point’s Racing.
“The speed is there so I am not stressed. It is only a matter of putting things together,” he explained.
Vettel was given three penalty points, putting him three away from a race banning.
Formula 1 principles dictate if they accrue 12 penalty points in any 12-month 22, that drivers receive an automated race ban.
Vettel has obtained all of his because last year’s US Grand Prix, that has been on 19-21 October 2018.
This usually means another driving error in Russian the Singapore or Japanese Grands Prix could trigger an automatic suspension.
Vettel said following the Italian Grand Prix that he was”unaware” of the penalty-point circumstance.
His Charles Leclerc, his second in a row won the race, after his success in Belgium the preceding week.
Vettel hasn’t won a race since the 2018 Belgian Grand Prix, and was close to a victory this season only once, when he crossed the line first in Canada in June but had been demoted to second by a five-second penalty for rejoining the trail dangerously after going off while still under pressure from Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes.
Vettel said in Italy on Sunday:”In my side, I’m happy, not with how it went with this spin.
“Then the race has been pretty much lost out there but at least the group was going and afterwards it had been close by Kimi [Raikkonen] last season, this time at least Charles sealed the success at the end for the team.”
There is consternation and concern in F1 at the regularity with which Vettel is creating driving mistakes – an average of every 3 races since a season’s French Grand Prix.
Monza watched his mistake that was fourth this year:
Vettel was granted two penalty points for every one of the incidents in Silverstone and also Montreal, and his two were for colliding with Verstappen while trying to pass him through last October’s Japanese Grand Prix.
Ferrari team leader Mattia Binotto did not address the problem but has previously said that Vettel’s errors should be observed in context, and that at other races he has put in solid performances and/or worked as a team player.
Binotto also said in Monza there wasn’t any uncertainty about Vettel’s location at Ferrari for 2020:”I’ve said it and I am confirming it again – for next year Sebastian and Charles are our drivers and there’s no doubt whatsoever about that”
As Vettel joined the celebratory team picture after the race, the Ferrari team members shook his title.
Vettel was miserable after qualifying at Monza because Leclerc hadn’t abided by an agreement to provide him a slipstream in their runs privately, since Vettel needed Leclerc on the first.
Leclerc reported that it had been a consequence of the confusion at the end of qualifying, in which the automobiles were bunched and went slowly around their’outside’ lap to try to avoid being first in the queue, because a slipstream is worth up to 0.5 minutes a lap at Monza.
Leclerc did move in front of Vettel about the near the corner, but made it to place a final lap. That meant Leclerc was on pole and Vettel fourth to the grid.
Radio communications in the time showed Vettel’s frustration. The drivers shared the problem on Saturday using Binotto afternoon but Ferrari refused to reveal exactly what was said.
After Leclerc won on Sunday, Binotto stated in German”perdonato” over the radio, so”I forgive you”.
Binotto told the press:”It means whatever occurred in the last days which we discussed – and that’s something which will stay between us at least today he did a great job which has been a method of saying we had been happy for the job he did.”
Asked whether he thought the incident would sour the relationship between the drivers, Binotto explained:”It’s something we discussed . There may be different points of view the outside lap was a situation for everybody.
“But we are looking ahead. I know I can count on them. I believe that it won’t affect [it]it does not mean it won’t happen. The spirit is anything you may do there’s something to understand.”
Vettel explained the problems that were qualifying hadn’t affected his mindset going into the race and were not related.
“I was in great spirits so that I really don’t believe that had some effect,” he explained.
