Manager Ryan Giggs criticised Wales’ performance because they beat Azerbaijan, but had been relieved to claim an”important” 2-1 triumph.
Gareth Bale’s late header saved Wales from an embarrassing draw against opponents ranked 109th in the world.
That kept alive their hopes of qualifying for Euro 2020, at Cardiff City Stadium on Friday even though having a bad display.
“There are positives, but also things I was dissatisfied with,” said Giggs.
“It was important. We mentioned before it turned out to be a must-win match and we won it.”
Wales took a first-half guide when Pavlo Pashayev was hit by a Bale shot and wrapped into an own goal.
Mahir Emreli equalised until Wales captain Bale led in with just more than five minutes to perform at the 58th minute, for Azerbaijan.
“I wasn’t satisfied with the first half,” Giggs said. “We did not play well, didn’t adhere to the game program. Too many mistakes, a lot of gamers off form.
“I wasn’t pleased at half-time since I understood 1-0 wouldn’t be good enough. We had to evaluate that second aim.
“I’m delighted with the three points, thrilled with the personality we have shown because it is hard at all. We constantly work hard.”
Back-to-back defeats against Hungary and Croatia in June – the first time Wales had dropped consecutive qualifiers for six years – had left Giggs’ side with precious little room for mistake for the remainder of this effort.
Friday’s victory increased up to next to Wales in Group E – level on six points using Slovakia. Croatia’s beating away win against Slovakia saw leaders are joined by the World Cup finalists Hungary on nine points.
The character of the performance against Azerbaijan was a reason for concern, although wales stay in contention to qualify.
“First half I wasn’t happy because I felt there were targets there if we stuck into the game plan, when we moved the ball immediately and were patient, left Azerbaijan run. We didn’t,” Giggs additional.
“We’re too hasty to get to the goal, in too much of a hurry to perform those forward passes.
“Azerbaijan are good at what they do, it’s the identical result they’d in Croatia. They might have scored two or even three in Croatia playing the same manner.
“It’s not simple. I’ve been in games like this. Youto play that danger ball’re not certain whether to stick or twist or not but you need to have that assurance. There were players in great shape in the first half.
“Joe Rodon great for his initial cap – wow, what a performance. Tom Lawrence worked hard and if he came on, Jonny Williams made a major difference.
“There were a lot of positives but I ask of gamers is they play to their ability and there weren’t enough that did tonight.”
