Manager Ryan Giggs criticised Wales’ performance as they overcome Azerbaijan, but had been relieved to claim an”important” 2-1 triumph.
Gareth Bale header rescued Wales from an draw against opponents ranked 109th in the world.
That kept alive his hopes of qualifying for Euro 2020, even though a poor display.
“There are positives, but things I was disappointed with,” said Giggs.
“It was significant. We said before it was a must-win match and we won it.”
Wales chose a first-half direct when Pavlo Pashayev was struck by a deflected Bale shot and wrapped into an own objective.
Mahir Emreli equalised for Azerbaijan until Wales captain Bale headed in with just over five minutes to perform, in the 58th minute.
“I wasn’t satisfied with the first half,” Giggs said. “We did not play well, did not stick to the game program. Too many errors, too many gamers off shape.
“I wasn’t pleased at half-time because I knew 1-0 would not be good enough. We had to score that second goal.
“I’m delighted with the 3 points, delighted with the personality we’ve shown because it’s not easy whatsoever. We always work hard”
Back-to-back defeats in June against Hungary and Croatia – the first time Wales had lost qualifiers for six years – had abandoned Giggs’ side for the remainder of this effort.
Friday’s victory lifted Wales around next in Group E – level on six points using Slovakia. Croatia’s thumping away win against Slovakia saw leaders are joined by the World Cup finalists Hungary on two points.
Wales remain to be eligible, but the character of their performance against Azerbaijan was a cause for concern.
“First half I wasn’t happy because I believed there were goals there when we stuck to the game plan, when we moved the ball quickly and were patient, forced Azerbaijan run. We did not,” Giggs additional.
“We’re too hasty to reach the goal, in too much of a hurry to play those forward moves.
“Azerbaijan are good at what they do, so it is the exact same result they’d in Croatia. They could have scored three or two in Croatia playing precisely the exact identical way.
“It is not easy. I have been like that in games. You’re never sure whether to stick or twist, to perform with that risk ball or not but you need to always have that confidence. There were not enough players in great shape from the first halfof the
“Joe Rodon excellent for his initial cap – wow, what a performance. Additionally Tom Lawrence worked hard and when he came on Jonny Williams made a big difference.
“There were lots of positives but I ask of players is that they play to their ability and there were not enough that did tonight.”
