Manager Ryan Giggs criticised Wales’ performance as they beat Azerbaijan, but was relieved to assert an”significant” 2-1 win.
Gareth Bale header stored Wales from a humiliating draw against opponents ranked 109th in the whole world.
That kept alive his hopes of qualifying for Euro 2020, at Cardiff City Stadium on Friday despite a screen.
“There are advantages, but also things I was dissatisfied with,” said Giggs.
“It was significant. We mentioned before it turned out to be a must-win match and we won it.”
Wales took a lead when a Bale shot wrapped in for an own goal and hit Pavlo Pashayev.
Mahir Emreli equalised until Wales captain Bale led in with just over five minutes to perform from the 58th minute, for Azerbaijan.
“I was not satisfied with the first half,” Giggs said. “We didn’t play well, didn’t adhere to the game plan. Too many mistakes, too many gamers off kind.
“I was not happy at half-time since I understood 1-0 would not be great enough. We needed to evaluate that second aim.
“I’m delighted with the three points, thrilled with the character we’ve shown because it’s not easy in any way. We always work hard.”
Back-to-back defeats against Croatia and Hungary – the first time Wales had dropped consecutive qualifiers for decades – had abandoned Giggs’ side for the rest of this effort with precious little room for error.
Friday’s victory increased up to next to Wales in Group E – degree on six points using fourth-placed Slovakia. Croatia’s thumping win against Slovakia saw leaders are joined by the World Cup finalists Hungary on two factors.
Wales stay in contention to qualify, but the operation against Azerbaijan’s character has been a cause for concern.
“First half I was not happy because I believed there were targets there when we stuck to the game plan, if we moved the ball quickly and were individual, forced Azerbaijan run. We did not,” Giggs added.
“We’re too hasty to get to the goal, in too much of a hurry to perform those forward moves.
“Azerbaijan are good at what they do, it is the identical result they’d in Croatia. They could have scored three or two in Croatia enjoying the identical way.
“It’s not straightforward. I have been like this in games. You’re not certain whether to stick or twist, to perform with that risk ball or not but you must have that assurance. There were not enough players in great shape from the first halfof the
“Joe Rodon excellent for his first cap – wow, what a performance. Tom Lawrence worked hard and if he came on Jonny Williams made a big difference.
“There were a lot of advantages but I ask of players is they play to their skill and there weren’t enough that did tonight.”
