Manager Ryan Giggs criticised Wales’ performance because they beat Azerbaijan, but was relieved to claim an”important” 2-1 win.
Gareth Bale’s late header stored Wales from a humiliating draw against opponents ranked 109th in the world.
That kept alive his hopes of qualifying for Euro 2020, despite a bad screen.
“There are advantages, but also things I was dissatisfied with,” said Giggs.
“It was significant. We said before it turned out to be a must-win match and we won it.”
Wales chose a first-half direct when Pavlo Pashayev was struck by a Bale shot that was deflected and wrapped in for an own goal.
Mahir Emreli equalised in the 58th minute for Azerbaijan, until Wales captain Bale headed in with just over five minutes to perform.
“I was not pleased with the first half,” Giggs said. “We didn’t play well, didn’t adhere to the game plan. Too many mistakes, a lot of gamers off shape.
“I was not pleased at half-time because I understood 1-0 wouldn’t be good enough. We had to evaluate that goal.
“I’m delighted with the 3 points, delighted with the character we have shown because it’s hard in any way. We always work hard”
Back-to-back defeats against Croatia and Hungary in June – the first time Wales had lost consecutive qualifiers for six years – had abandoned Giggs’ side for the remainder of this effort.
Friday’s victory increased Wales up to next in Group E – level on six points with fourth-placed Slovakia. The beating of croatia away win against Slovakia saw leaders are joined by the World Cup finalists Hungary on nine points.
The nature of their performance against Azerbaijan has been a reason for concern, although wales stay to be eligible.
“First half I wasn’t happy because I believed there were targets there when we stuck to the game program, when we moved the ball quickly and were individual, made Azerbaijan run. We did not,” Giggs additional.
“We were too hasty to get to the goal, in too much of a hurry to play those forward moves.
“Azerbaijan are good at what they do, and it is the exact same outcome they’d in Croatia. They might have scored two or three in Croatia enjoying exactly the exact identical manner.
“It is not simple. I have been in games like this. Youto play with that danger ball’re not certain whether to stick or twist or not but you must always have that confidence. There were not enough players in great form in the first half.
“Joe Rodon excellent for his first cap – wow, what a performance. Tom Lawrence worked quite hard and if he arrived on, Jonny Williams made a large difference.
“There were lots of positives but I ask of gamers is that they play with their ability and there were not enough that did that tonight.”
