Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy says youthful forward Aaron Connolly is quite much in his ideas for their upcoming games.
Connolly has just been drafted into the mature group for the Euro 2020 qualifiers in Georgia and Switzerland.
However, McCarthy says that the 19-year-olds weekend proves he deserves to be in the combination over the next fortnight.
I wouldnt have put him at the group unless I thought he was (in contention), said McCarthy.
He was excellent (contrary to Tottenham). His goals were both very good – .
His motion was good, he obtained across the protector and then, having experienced the first shot saved, he had the presence of mind to spin and put it in the web.
He actually has got some personality about the pitch, thats for sure.
If somebody gets from the very first team in the Premier League and is playing well and scoring goals, then he has every chance of getting an opportunity in our group.
Im surprised by him, I am delighted by his performances.
The fact that hes come in here on a high with some momentum from the weekend is fine too. He gives me a great option.
McCarthy remains hopeful that David McGoldrick and Shane Duffy could be fit in time to play some part in the qualifiers.
He explained:I had a message from Shane before on and he said hes feeling good.
I havent spoken to David for a while but (Sheffield United manager) Chris Wilder said theyre doing what they can to make him match.
The two lads would like to be healthy and, if they could get there, I will wait as long as I can.
