After a busy weekend to VAR Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher chooses the bones out of the decisions in Ref Watch’s most recent edition.
Even the Old Firm derby along with the north London derby both took centre stage over the weekend but that there was lots of controversy with three red cards straight out over the Premier League, one mad Norwich manager and a fresh argument brewing on where the bar should lie on’clear and obvious mistakes’.
Just how was it seen by Dermot? Here’s Sky Sports’ resident ref’s view…
INCIDENT: the aim of Henri Lansbury is ruled out as the referee’s whistle has gone, so that Jack Grealish could be booked for simulation. VAR does not offer a penalty.
VERDICT Grealish did not dive.
DERMOT SAYS:”VAR was used partially on this. You have to go backward on it. Before the ball was hit by Lansbury did the referee blow the whistle? He did, there is no uncertainty. So there’s no way the goal could be awarded.
“You work backward, was it a penalty, did Gary Cahill create a foul? The VAR says and appears at this. I believe they’re correct, it wasn’t a filthy, so you default back into the swimmer’s conclusion which is that Jack Grealish simulated.
“Whether you like it or not, VAR couldn’t do anything about that. All of it defaulted back into Kevin Friend.
“If the whistle had not goneVAR would have assessed whether the goal was valid, and also the referee might have said he believed that there was a simulation, so I’m likely to provide that.
“They can assess whether it’s a penalty, but they can’t check simulation. The referee made there, it is not the choice that I would’ve made but he left it.
“There is three indications if we wait. You can look at because the referee decided to make his choice when he struck the ground, that’s the only thing.
“The referee’s mindset is that he’s gone over too readily, he’s trying to win a punishment. I thought it was not a dive. I believed Cahill has made contact.”
INCIDENT: Harry Kane goes down under a challenge from Sokratis at the final moment in the Arsenal penalty area, but VAR equally and the referee decide against committing a spot-kick.
VERDICT: Right call.
DERMOT SAYS:”For me personally, certainly not a penalty. If you appear, he takes his ground steps across him , sees Sokratis and goes into him. I believed Martin Atkinson not simply refereed a fantastic match in a manner that was fantastic, but he obtained this perfect.
“There is contact there, we still do not not wanting a lot of yellows when contact left but I think it’s not a penalty, that’s the crucial problem.”
INCIDENT: after a VAR review He’s given a card, although Youri Tielemans seems to postage Callum Wilson
VERDICT: Properly handled based on what the participant saw.
DERMOT SAYS:”It does not hit on the threshold, the bar is set very large. What shows it’s a red card for me, some people I’ve spoken to say this is not, the very first clip you see, precisely exactly the identical angle the referee sees, it doesn’t look a red card. During play it didn’t seem a red.
“I feel that the threshold has to be that everyone’s going to go,’yeah we are in this camp’.”
INCIDENT: Jonny Evans when both players Opt for a 50/50, nothing is given by the player is stood on by Jefferson Lerma
VERDICT: card.
DERMOT SAYS:”The referee did not see it or give a foul. When you notice it, it a yellow, and a yellow, however the VAR can’t intervene. The argument is, is it a red card question? When you have a look at the Tielemans one and that’s not given as a red, it would be very tricky to give a red for this.”
INCIDENT: Ryan Jack and Callum McGregor both perpetrate bad tackles on Boli Bolignoli and Scott Arfield, with force, respectively Before Jordan Jones is sent for Rangers. Neither is reserved.
VERDICT: Right call.
DERMOT SAYS:”There’s a few of those. It goes in as low, and difficult from McGregor. The referee actually plays on, I believe if he stops play he’ll provide a yellow card.
“With Jack, It’s a yellow card in the best. He’s gone in hard. The two players are committed, it is inevitable they are likely to come. He gets just a little touch on the ball”
INCIDENT: The chunk Seems to hit the hand moments of Isaac Hayden before Fabian Schar scores to equalise for Newcastle, which goes undetected by VAR or the referee
VERDICT: Incorrect call.
DERMOT SAYS:”It didn’t get picked up. Because they had been hoping to keep the game and do it as rapidly as possible, whether that’s, I really don’t know.
“However, what it will do, it’s about reflection and going forward it’s going be – is it offside, is there a filthy, can there be a handball – go through the checklist, and if it takes another 10 or 15 minutes then be it”
INCIDENT: Sebastien Haller not Provided penalty after evident contact at the Norwich box, so the decision Doesn’t overturn
VERDICT Choice.
DERMOT SAYS:”I think ti’s a punishment. The chunk is your hint, consider it and it moves off. It’s about manifestation, this week, the referees are meeting, it may be discussed that the VAR may have got included.
“It is an ongoing process, we’ve said it might take three years to iron things out. I said at the beginning of the season that it will be a rough ride, perhaps that’s one where they say it should’ve been ”
INCIDENTS: Sebastian Farke is angered when Haller’s late challenge on Andriy Yarmolenko’s alleged elbow on Tom Trybull both and Christoph Zimmermann go unpunished by VAR
VERDICT: either decision would not overturn.
DERMOT SAYS:”About the foul, I believe he could be incorrect to suggest it was not assessed, it might well have been looked at but because the game wasn’t stopped, it has looked at in play. It’s low, it’s endangering his competitor or not dangerous. It is certainly not a card.
“It is rather difficult to say it’s an elbow either. How fast it occurs and if it is skimmed to his chest maybe but I wouldn’t call it malicious or nasty.”
