Because he wants to close in on Roger Federer’s Grand Slam record, rafael Nadal is taking nothing for granted against his US Open semi-final opponent Matteo Berrettini.
A fourth US Open title which would move him within one major win of matching Federer’s tally of 20 is being chased by nadal.
The area appears clear for Nadal since the one of the’three’ defending champion Novak Djokovic and standing at Flushing Meadows following the shock exits of Federer.
But if Nadal needed a reminder that it won’t be all plain sailing at New York if he faces Berrettini, the seed that was Italian, to get a spot in the final against either Daniil Medvedev or Grigor Dimitrov, then one has been received by him.
Nadal has never played with after arriving through five sets against Gael Monfils the 23-year-old, who reached his first Grand Slam semi-final.
The Spaniard said:”He’s having a wonderful year. He winning a great deal of matches. From the semi-finals of a Grand Slam match you can not expect an easy opponent. You can not expect an easy match.
“I actually believe that if you want to win tournaments, you need to go through tough competitions like I had against Marin (Cilic) and against Diego (Schwartzman).
“He was playing great the whole event, and now another participant is playing good. He’s serving huge, enormous forehands, moving well, and enormous confidence since he’s having a terrific year.”
Berrettini was nine when he became aware observing his epic poem final triumph.
“They had been showing the match on the TV at no cost, however it was, like, a channel that was all roughly animations,” he recalled. “I was young. These guys, I mean, half an hour. Come on! I need to capture my animations.”
Medvedev and dimitrov meet at the first semi-final, a could have tipped at the face of the draw that included Djokovic and Federer.
Injuries have observed a former world , Bulgarian Dimitrov, slide to 78 eight attempts – unexpected, making his triumph over Federer – his first in the rankings.
“It was that low that I do not even want to go there any more,” he explained of a miserable year.
“It was clearly injury, losing points, standing. That’s the lowest point of any player. The previous six, seven weeks have been pretty rough. But I had somebody to lean on, my loved ones, my friends.
“Next thing you know, you’re nearly end of the year, you have a result similar to that. It’s pretty special to me.”
