The Washington Nationals got a Answer last night.
Last night having lost the opener by a score of 5-0, the Nationals fired back with a 6-2 win. Stephen Strasburg completed the Nationals with a strong showing.
He allowed two earned runs, while the bullpen looked after the rest. Ryan Zimmerman has been the big winner of the night offensively, as he travelled 4-for-3 with 3 RBI’s. There is no way they will grab the Braves in the NL East, but hosting the Wild Card Game in the National League isn’t from this equation.
The Wild Card Game in Washington is the most likely situation. They are entering Thursday with a 3-game guide on the Cubs to get homefield and 3.5 on the Brewers. The Brewers continue to pitch last night after recording a 7-5 triumph over the Marlins.
No Yelich? No problem stated Mike Moustakas. Playing a role that was bigger today, Moustakas delivered a shot across the fence to take a 7-5 lead. Meanwhile, over in San Diego that the Cubs had a lifeless performance against the Padres.
If the Nationals remain the course, they will not need to be concerned about Brewers or the Cubs. The Nationals haven’t been playing their best baseball recently. They’re 2-6 in their last eight games, so last night was a much-needed win to the Nats.
Strasburg managed to get them from the funk and it’s up to Patrick Corbin to sustain it. We will probably see Scherzer get the call in a Wild Card Game, but Corbin and Strasburg are choices. It’s a good problem. The Twins still have a 4-game lead over the Indians. Corbin gets the call against Kyle Gibson tonight. Head below for our complimentary Nationals vs. Twins pick.

Patrick Corbin was a continuous stone for the Washington Nationals at 2019. The contract that he signed with the Nationals turned some heads, but it has paid off to the Nationals. If he reupped with the Diamondbacks, we are talking about them going to the postseason. Corbin was correct on pace with his production from last season. It hasn’t been quite different, as he published a 3.15 ERA last year and moves into Thursday with a 3.16 ERA in 2019.
He has been coasting through lineups lately also. Corbin has not allowed more than just 3 runs. Since that time he has allowed less or 2 runs in five outings. That performance against the Diamondbacks in the desert was an outlier for Corbin. Note that in 14 of his last 15 starts, he is granted 3 or 2 runs. In 13 out of those 15 games, fewer or 2 runs have been enabled by Corbin, therefore he managed to get back on track following faltering in Arizona. Pitchers have the ability to do that.
Corbin was strong against the Twins at 31 at-bats. They’re hitting .226 with 1 home run. The offense is expecting that Kyle Gibson will offer a lift . He has been anything but sharp lately, as he enters with a 6.88 ERA along with 1.59 WHIP in his past three outings. He is allowed at least four runs in four out of the five starts in 2019.
The Nats have performed against Gibson too, hitting him to get a .314 batting average and .344 OBP in 86 at-bats. Yan Gomes has been a horror against Gibson, with two long balls plus a .433 typical in 30 plate appearances. Also note that Gibson has been negative at residence in 2019, as he has posted an ERA of 4.76 in 81.1 innings. This is going to be an entertaining affair between the Nationals and Twins. The Nationals seem like the play, however.
