Michael Owen’s new book has sparked a row on networking involving the England striker along with Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer.
Among the more cutting outlines from the publication comprises Owen’s claim that his transfer from Real Madrid to the Magpies at 2005 has been a”down step” and the one movement he”really regrets”.
The pair exchanged barbed tweets since the story broke on Tuesday – but what is the history of the feud?
In Reboot – My LifeMy Time, which has been serialised in the Daily Mirror, Owen goes into detail about his connection with Newcastle’s fans through an injury-hit spell with the club, which finished with him linking Manchester United after the Magpies’ relegation to the Championship in 2009.
“I should have followed my gut instincts, so I didn’t wish to move there – my heart was set to a return to Liverpool,” said Owen – who’d left Anfield for Real in 2004 – of his go to St James’ Park.
The 39-year-old former England captain also claimed Newcastle were”just a large club in the feeling that it has lots of fans and a large arena”. Ouch.
Match of the Day pundit Shearer, the Magpies’ record goalscorer, responded on social media.
Tweeting a chunk of Owen telling BT Sport at 2018 he”couldn’t wait to retire to the last six or seven years” of his profession, Shearer posted:”Yes, Michael, we believed that too, whilst on #120K a week.”
Enter Owen again, questioning Shearer’s devotion to Newcastle…
That retort got people talking, but did this blood start?
The relegation in 2009 of newcastle appears to be the catalyst for the group’s strained relationship, according to Owen’s publication.
Shearer was supervisor in the time also, going into the last day of this season, the Magpies had at least a draw at Aston Villa or their spell in the Premier League would return to a conclusion.
Owen claims he was not fully fit however, together with Villa 1-0 up through the particular goal of Damien Duff, the striker arrived as a substitute in the 66th minute.
Newcastle could not discover a response and were condemned into the Championship, also Owen alleges Shearer had been”seething” together with him and insinuated that the player”had a eye on my next contract”, with his current deal about to run out.
“I believed that I was being made a scapegoat,” explained Owen.
“When you examine it, it makes sense. Shearer’s listing as manager in the last eight matches of that 2008-09 season was dire: lost five, brought two, won one.”
Of his 49-year-old former England team-mate, Owen added:”Alan Shearer and I still haven’t talked out this face to face and that is a shame because, as I’ve said many, many occasions, we had been quite great friends.”
He then goes on to explain he’d been a part of an extensive interview using BT Sport at 2018 where he’d touched upon his encounters with trauma in his profession and has been taken aback by how Shearer had”began ranting about it on Twitter”.
Owen asserts he had a text dialog using Shearer after this tweet where he provided an explanation after Shearer had said Newcastle fans could be”unimpressed to listen to that he did not enjoy playing with there”.
“It wentas I suspected, exactly nowhere,” he further added.
Gary Lineker, that hosts Match of the Day as well as working with Owen on BT Sport, later acted as peacemaker as the spat continued.
“There seems to be a little background here? I like you so do not want to choose sides,” that he also tweeted.
