Sergio Garcia and Callum Shinkwin go into the Last Evening of Their KLM Open as Matt Wallace surged into contention on day three at 29, tied to the lead.
Garcia and Shinkwin both fired 66s to strike the front on 15 under, making them a two-shot guide over Nicolai Hojgaard, while Wallace’s superb leaves him off the pace after 54 holes and lifted him.
However, it was a day for instantly leader Scott Jamieson, who tumbled down.
Shinkwin bogeyed the putt of the round, although shinkwin had the greater of Garcia at the flip as the young Englishman’s four birdies in an outward 32 beat the Spaniard by one.
The 26-year-old, who arrived at the Netherlands ranked 126th in the Rush to Dubai and requiring a powerful finish to the season to retain his cardresponded with three birdies in four holes from the 14th, even though he was not able to add another at the par-five last.
But Garcia shut his bogey-free 66 out with birdies and declared himself delighted with his game, especially his kind around the greens.
“I am very pleased,” said the former Masters champion. “It helps when you’re swinging well, but it’s not straightforward. It is never easy. It was tricky although sometimes we make it look like that, there were a few holes where the end brought me a tiny bit and hit two shots and didn’t get anything.
“Obviously if you’re hitting the ball well and hit a lot of greens and you’re rolling the ball well, even in case you don’t make them you feel good as you are hitting good putts. I struck many of these now, like on 13 plus a couple others for example like 15 which seemed like they were planning to move in and only missed.
“I Had a good deal. Not only me but I think everyone knows how important placing is and if you’re a good ball-striker, it always feels like you are missing over the rest because you’ve got a great deal more birdie putts but they are from a further distance so it is a lot much easier to overlook them. I realise that and remain patient and that’s what I have been doing.”
Shinkwin included:”I had been matching Sergio shot for shot. As much as everyone says do not watch your playing partner, you have to watch your playing partner and Sergio had been hitting his straight and was hitting close. When he was matched by me I had been doing well.
“I have got to keep my feelings inside. Should I hit a shot, do not let it influence me and just walk and play with the next one. I beat myself too much not creating birdies . I must take it one shot at a time and hope that it feels in.”
Wallace had earlier made a enormous move when he birdied five of their first six holes after another in the ninth, his momentum stalled using a bogey at the 10th until he got back with three birdies in four holes from the 12th.
The Englishman closed along with his 10th gain of the round to set the clubhouse target, and he would end the day in a tie for fifth – 53 areas higher than Friday evening – with fellow Englishmen Matthew Southgate (70) and Steven Brown (68) additionally on 11 under.
James Morrison, another English challenger, is 1 stroke closer to the lead after he returned.
