Jamie Hughes thinks he can jolt Michael van Gerwen at the World Grand Prix after a year that owes much to staying in full-time employment.
After he operated at 2018, his big break came as 2019 rebounds – the Englishman sealing his PDC excursion card at Q School in January due to a potent display. He has not looked back since.
In Junehe scooped his eponymous PDC name, beating Stephen Bunting from the Darts Open which ensured him a place in the World Matchplay. Hell have taken heart in the victory although he bowed out in Blackpool at the first round, losing 10-7 to eventual finalist Michael Smith.
The 33-year-old isnt lacking confidence even though being drawn against the worlds best player in Sundays first round of this Grand Prix going into his important.
It is quite a brief format really, initially to two groups, he told The Darts Show Podcast. It is essentially just like a Pro Tour, you have got to win legs. That is how Im considering it. Its quite a short format. If I could hit the ground runninginto it early hopefully, I can lead to a huge upset.
He does not have any motive to lack perception.
The confidence has ever been there, but [that the Czech Darts Open title] wasnt only to myself but to everybody else just how much of a danger I am when I am playing well, he continued.
If anything, it added a little more pressure, since theres a bit more anticipation. Im likely regarded as a possible winner of Euro Tours now since I have won one
Players must acclimatise into thedouble-in format of the World Grand Prix but it wont unsettle the BDO World Championship semi-finalist.
Ive played most of my darting career in double-in leagues, in lesser leagues, so Ive a whole lot of experience, Hughes said.
I dont try and do anything else [in training]… I just continue with the same routines. I am a bit of a creature of habit. I love to get into patterns, and I think that is more significant.
It is possible to throw away the form book out the window a tiny bit if you do mix things up. It [the format] is different. The players are not likely to be in that regard in form.
It probably will be easier for audiences to freshen up things a little, because it will appear to be the exact same sort of players playing on the TV the entire time, so it could freshen it up with a few more upsets if it did spice up things a bit.
For Hughes, he will revert to type – its gotten him this far. When many players choose to commit fulltime to the oche,Yozza has stayed in employment.
Because he proceeds to rise through the rankings staying busy has worked a treat for him. By playing 2, his match was never satisfied.
I did try this about 12 weeks before I switched [into the PDC], he explained. It didnt work really, and it had been a lot of darts. There was nothing actually [else]. It had been 24/7. This was a bit too intensive. That is why I went back to do the job. I wished to take my mind.
I was putting myself under a lot more pressure because I had been putting far more time , expecting to have far more out. That wont always work like that.
I have discovered my game popped up when I began working . Its one of the kind of balancing acts. You need to balance it . You will need to give a rest time to yourself as well as obtaining the practice in, and obviously the travelling and matches.
If you get the balance right, then terrific. I think the balance is not too bad in the moment.
Hughes knows exactly what works for him, and he has no lack of belief. He will be seeking to show what he is capable of.
