Jamie Hughes thinks he can shock Michael van Gerwen in the World Grand Prix following a year that owes much to remaining in employment.
After he worked at 2018, his big break came since 2019 dawned – the Englishman sealing his PDC excursion card at Q School in January. He has never looked back since.
In Junehe scooped his maiden PDC name, beating Stephen Bunting in the Darts Open closing, which ensured him a spot in the World Matchplay. Although he glanced in Blackpool at the first round, losing he will have taken heart.
The 33-year-old isnt lacking confidence even though being drawn from the worlds best player in the first round of the Grand Prix of Sunday, heading to his next important.
Its quite a short format actually, initially to two places, he told The Darts Show Podcast. It is basically just like a Pro Tour, youve got to win legs. Thats how Im looking at it. Its quite a brief format. If I could hit the floor running, getting into it early hopefully, I can cause a big upset.
He does not have any motive to lack belief.
The assurance has always been there, but [that the Czech Darts Open name ] wasnt just to myself to everybody else just how much of a danger I am when I am playing well, he continued.
If anything, it included a little more pressure, since theres a bit more anticipation. Im likely viewed as a potential winner of Euro Tours now because Ive won one.
Players should acclimatise to thedouble-in format of the World Grand Prix in Dublin, but the two-time BDO World Championship semi-finalist wont be unsettled by it.
Ive played all my career in double-in championships, in lesser leagues, so I have a lot of experience, Hughes said.
I dont try and do anything different [in training]… I simply carry on using the exact routines. I am a tiny creature of habit. I love to get into good routines, and I believe that is more significant.
You can throw away the form book out the window just a little bit if you do mix up things. It [the format] differs. The players are not likely to be in that regard in form.
It likely will be better for audiences to freshen up things a little, since it does appear like the same type of players playing with the TV the entire time, so it could freshen it up with a few more upsets whether it did spice things up a little.
For Hughes, hell revert to sort – it has gotten him this far. When many players opt to commit to the oche,Yozza has remained in employment.
Since he continues to rise through the rankings, staying occupied has worked a deal for him. His match was never satisfied by playing full-time.
I did try it about 12 weeks before I changed [into the PDC], he clarified. It did not work really, and it had been a lot of darts. There was nothing really [else]. It had been 24/7. This was a tiny bit too intensive. That is the reason why I went back to work. I wished to take my mind.
I was putting myself under a lot more pressure since I had been putting a lot more time , expecting to get a lot more out. That wont always work like that.
I have discovered my game popped back up when I started working again. It is one of those sort of functions. You need to balance it. You will need to give a rest time to yourself as well as obtaining the clinic in, and obviously the travelling and matches.
If you have the balance right, then amazing. I believe that the balance isnt too bad in the moment.
Hughes knows what works for him personally and he does not have any shortage of belief. Hell be seeking to show what he is capable of in the times in Citywest.
