Rugby legend Gareth Thomas has revealed he is living with HIV, with kept the investigation a secret for years, but claims he was forced to tell folks.
The 45-year-old became the first UK sportsman to disclose he’s the virus during an interview with the Sunday Mirror – before showing in a video on his Twitter page he was”forced” to produce the admission.
In the video he states:”I need to share my secret with you. Why? Because it’s mine to let. Before I do Maybe not the evils threatening to inform you.
“Now even though I’ve been made to tell you this, I choose to struggle to instruct.”
Talking to the Sunday Mirror, he stated he had felt”shame” on the identification and has been suicidal at one stage.
“I had a panic people would judge me and treat me like a leper due to a lack of understanding,” he explained.
“I had been in a dark location, feeling dizzy. I thought of pushing off a cliff”
League star and the former Wales rugby union came out as homosexual at 2009, becoming the first rugby international to do.
Describing the afternoon that he received the diagnosis, Thomas stated:”I will never forget the minute I discovered. I went at a clinic in Cardiff to get a sexual health test.
“I had had the evaluations every now and again and they would always come back fine. I didn’t feel ill and that I thought everything was going to be fine.
“The woman who did the test took blood as normal, I went outside to my vehicle and waited for around an hour before heading back in to get my results.
“When I moved back in, I sat down on a seat beside a doctor’s bench. She informed me at a very matter-of-fact way I had tested HIV positive”
The rugby star said he promptly”broke ” and”believed I was about to die”, adding:”I felt just like an express train was hitting on at 300mph.”
Mr Thomas now takes one tablet containing four medications a day and his condition is”imperceptible” – meaning it can’t be passed .
His spouse Stephen, that he met after being diagnosed with, does not have HIV.
There’s still a lot of stigma across the disease although Approximately 101,600 people in the united kingdom live with HIV.
HIV will progress to AIDS if it isn’t treated, but many patients in wealthy nations do not develop AIDS when they undergo treatment.
Thomas said:”Many individuals live in fear and shame of getting HIV, however, I refuse to be one of them now. We need to break the blot and for all.
“I’m speaking out because I’d like to help other people and make a difference”
