It Had Been Really the U-turn from Danny Cowley along with his brother Nicky.
Just later after turning down the chance to handle Huddersfield, over a week, he will as his new side chooses on Sheffield Wednesday he sat in the dugout at the John Smith’s Arena on Sunday, live on Sky Sports Football.
But what changed ?
“I think that the significant change for us has been the chance to handle the club,” he told Sky Sports. “We see this as a longterm job, likely three years. The success we have had at previous clubs is if we at least have an engagement, in each region of the club, or can manage.
“As a head coach you take care of the group on the grass and around the pitch, but that is not sufficient for me. Have the opportunity to build a golf club, that is exactly what me and Nicky have done and that’s what gives us our satisfaction but additionally I like to win a Saturday.
“That was hugely important for us and today we feel we can have an impact on the academy, which is important for sustainable achievement . We can impact the health and sports science work that is currently going on here, and the recruiting side of things. That is an important part of becoming successful.
“We have to be realistic of where we’re now. We’re in a relegation struggle. What we’ve got to try and do is build towards becoming competitive next year, maybe completing 10 and after that consolidate our status. Then hopefully we’ll have some foundations by that stage to go out there and reach another soccer wonder.”
Along with his brother and assistant Nicky, have taken the jump from Lincoln – that are near the very top of League 1 – to Huddersfield, currently with just 1 league win in 2019 and place in the Championship.
Cowley could have heeded recent lessons from lower-league managers that have struggled when creating the step up into the Championship. Nathan Jones and paul Hurst are two who have laboured after departing upwardly-mobile League One nightclubs, but the 40-year-old thinks he has what it takes to flip the position around. But it won’t be a speedy fix.
“This is a mindset matter,” he said. “We have spoken to a lot of people round the club who believe that they are one win from changing that, but I am not so convinced.
“To impact people’s confidence and provide people belief it’s about the procedure and methodology of the way you operate. It is about giving the group responsibility inside and the gamers clarity of their roles and a gameplan, and it’s about rehearsing and understanding the functionality.
“When you develop that you receive a little bit of alignment, and then the players start to rehearse this and get some successes, then they build confidence. It’s a process and it will take time. We’ve made some gains so far in, but there’s quite a way to go.
“I think that the purpose is to attempt to bring some values which are important to us and try to represent those inside the football club. There are some non-negotiables for us with regards to discipline, our relentless work ethic and respect, but also enthusiasm and humility.
“You’ve got to enjoy what you do and when you do well you’ve got to stay ground and concentrated, and keep wanting to learn and move forward. They are the values we try to live to every day and that which we attempt to instil. That surely allowed us to find success also for us who gives you the base to deliver through our processes and to the point.
“I really wish I had a magic wand but I don’t. What I do have is a huge amount of enthusiasm and a work ethic. And I’m blessed to have Nicky with me, who has that too.”
The opportunity for himself as well as his brother Nicky to shoot over a club which were at the Premier League just a few months past must have been hard to refuse, particularly once you think where they’ve come from, but the ties they had forged at the club left his departure incredibly tricky. Would have enticed him away.
“This was the toughest choice of our own lives because of the relationships we’d assembled there and the loyalty we felt to the people and the team,” he said. “They’re brilliant with us and also we all had a great relationship with the supporters.
“We’re completely satisfied with the board of directors and needed a very hard-working set of staff that all started with us at the start, mostly as interns and volunteers, and we built it up with them. We had a very talented and hardworking group of players, and it had been hard to leave.
“It did feel a bit like a mourning process, I know that sounds magnificent! Nevertheless, it was emotional. Each second of that travel lived and we’ll forever be conscious of what we reached there. We think we left the team in a location and we know they’ll continue to get success.
“However, Nicky and I are extremely impatient and we want it now. It is not Lincoln’s moment since they need to establish themselves in League One very first to be aggressive, and we were offered the chance to control a club.
“This is a daunting task due to their unbelievable history, also with a few of the supervisors who’ve already been here, but this is what life really is. I would like to awaken in the morning of being challenged with the excitement, I want to feel the heat. That is what living is to me.”
From Concorde Rangers in the Essex Senior Football League. Cowley was through nearly every branch – except for the 1 right at the very top.
Nicky also he, however, have ancient roots in direction that might seem far more recognizable to the typical football fan.
“Folks say it started with Championship Manager, and we all did play with that a lot as children, we would often begin with a lower-league group and work through the branches,” he explained. “Mum would inform Nicky to stop playing it and get on with his homework, and Nicky now tells her if she’d enabled him to play with it a tiny bit longer than possibly we would maintain the Premier League at the moment!
“However, it’s been an extraordinary journey for us and also the truth that our family was part of it all the way makes it an even prouder moment for us. I wouldn’t alter my pathway to the entire world, I heard a lot from teaching and to start at the base of non-League and develop my skill-set from there has been a terrific journey. I’ve learned a lot along the way and I am excited about learning a lot more.
“We didn’t come this far to only come this far. We have managed in eight of the best 10 branches, that’s something we are really proud of but clearly we would like to manage in the 10th one.”
