Manchester United Women vs Arsenal Women
FA WSL
7:30pm Monday 16th September
Leigh Sports Village
Danielle van de Donk’s 89th-minute winner gave Arsenal a 1-0 victory over Manchester United.
United had appeared to continue to their first stage since being promoted into this Barclays FA Women’s Super League although the breakthrough was found by the defending champions.
Former Manchester United full-back Patrice Evra and England boss Phil Neville were among the crowd at Leigh Sports Village.
Since recovering from the cruciate ligament injury that ruled her out of the World 25, england star Jordan Nobbs created her first start for Arsenal.
United needed a golden opportunity to open the scoring in the 15th minute when Jessica Sigsworth’s cross picked out Ella Toone six yards but she couldn’t direct her pointer target.
She ventured to life, and celebrity striker Vivianne Miedema was quiet, although arsenal took their time getting moving.
United goalkeeper Mary Earps was equal to the challenge, however, maintaining the Dutchwoman’s header and rescuing Miedema’s follow-up effort with her feet.
Arsenal began the second half as they ended the first however, they created one of their best chances of the match when the shackles did break.
Jane Ross was one time with Manuela Zinsberger however, the’keeper saved.
Three minutes after Earps made another excellent save to deny Kim Little and it was.
When Hayley Ladd fired broad, united had one final opportunity but the traffic, and chiefly Miedema, laid siege to Earps’ goal.
Miedema headed wide volleyed over, hit a post and watched one cleared off the line before replacement Van de Donk implemented the final touch as the ball ricocheted across the goalmouth.
