It was terrifying at the 8th and 9th inning for the Chicago Cubs yesterday day, but the bullpen ultimately got the job completed to secure a 2-0 success. The night before, the Cubs managed to blow what seemed like a safe lead in the 9th. However, a similar fate was not likely to occur again to the Cubs. Tyler Chatwood and Rowan Wick combined to pitch three perfect innings, allowing no hits and no runs. The only mistake was Tyler Chatwood devoting a walk.
Chatwood has grown into the best reliever that the Cubs have in their bullpen. Joe Maddon simply has not been using him often turning to his conventional relievers rather than Chatwood, that has primarily been used as a rookie in his career. Among the problems with turning into Chatwood more frequently is the amount of work that he gets from the bullpen.
After items are rolling, he is usually eclipsing 3 innings on the bulge, so that takes him from the equation to get the following moment. Maddon has been careful to preserve his arm down the stretch for the most significant period of their regular season. But after blowing off what should have been a sure win on Friday night, the Cubs had to go to Chatwood to find some of their mojo back from the clubhouse.
Jon Lester should find some recognition in that area also. Lester was going through struggles, but appears to be back on the perfect path. The Cubs will need him down the stretch if they wish to be playing in October. Lester was eloquent in 6 innings, having allowed only 4 hits and no runs. The Cubs will turn to Jose Quintana tonight, while the Pirates will proceed with Mitch Keller on Sunday Night Baseball. Head below to our complimentary Cubs vs. Pirates pick.

Mitch Keller will probably soon be making just his fifth important league start this day and it comes from primetime on Sunday Night Baseball. The rookie is getting some invaluable experience upward in the big leagues with the Pirates. It’s been a choppy start to his profession, using a couple horrible outings and a couple that went pretty well. His very best effort came from his latest outing, since he had been sharp with just 1 earned run enabled in five innings against the Angels at Anaheim.
In his other favorable outing, Keller surrendered 4 hits and two earned runs into the Tigers at home. The Tigers have one of the worst offenses in baseball, and so that could have only been a result of playing a terrible team. Keller was abysmal from the Braves and Reds in his other two excursions, allowing 12 earned runs in seven innings of work.
Fortunatelyhe managed to bring down his numbers against the Tigers and the Angels, however, the damage was done. Keller heads into Sunday night by an ERA of both 7.94 and 2.00 WHIP. He would find a massive rush of assurance in case tonight proves to be a victory night in the workplace. I’m not so certain he gets from this one having a leading stat line, though. The Cubs slept yesterday afternoon and holding down them like that again is going to be tough to the Pirates.
The Pirates get a date. He has been throwing extremely well recently. The Athletics and Phillies scored only 2 runs in complete throughout 13 innings of play against Quintana. Quintana goes to this one with the impressive 1.89 ERA and also 0.79 WHIP in his past three outings.
It’s also been five outings since he has allowed more than 3 runs in a start and less runs in seven of the past eight appearences. The Pirates are hitting just .202 with 3 home runs hit from Quintana in 124 showings at the plate. The Cubs have had their battles on the road in 2019, however, look for them to wrap this up road trip with a win on Sunday Night Baseball.
