It was scary in the 8th and 9th inning for the Chicago Cubs yesterday day, but the bullpen finally got the work done to secure a 2-0 victory. The night before, the Cubs managed to dismiss what looked like a safe lead in the 9th. But an identical fate wasn’t going to occur again for the Cubs. Tyler Chatwood and Rowan Wick combined to pitch three innings, allowing no hits and no runs. The only real mistake was Tyler Chatwood.
Chatwood has grown in the best reliever that the Cubs have in their bullpen. Joe Maddon just has not been using him enough, often turning into his traditional relievers rather than Chatwood, who has primarily been used as a starter in his career. Among the difficulties with turning to Chatwood more frequently is the total amount of work he gets out of the bullpen.
If items are rolling, he is usually eclipsing 3 innings about the bump, so that chooses him from the equation to get the following day. Maddon has been careful to preserve his arm down the stretch to the most important period of the normal season. But after blowing off what should happen to be a certain triumph on Friday night, the Cubs had to visit Chatwood to find a few of their mojo back in the clubhouse.
Jon Lester must find some recognition in this spot. Lester was going through struggles, but seems to be back to the right path. The Cubs are going to require him down the stretch if they want to be playing in October. Lester was eloquent in 6 innings, having allowed only 4 hits and no runs. The Cubs will turn into Jose Quintana tonight, while the Pirates will go with Mitch Keller on Sunday Night Baseball. Head below for our free Cubs vs. Pirates select.

Mitch Keller will probably be making just his fifth key league start this evening and it comes in primetime on Sunday Night Baseball. The rookie is getting some valuable experience up in the big leagues with the Pirates. It’s been a choppy start to his career, with a couple horrible outings plus a couple that went pretty well. His very best effort came from his most recent outing, since he was sharp with just 1 earned run enabled in five innings against the Angels in Anaheim.
In his other positive outing, Keller surrendered 4 hits and two earned runs into the Tigers in the home. The Tigers have one of the worst crimes in baseball, so that may have only been a consequence of playing a poor team. Keller was abysmal against the Braves and Reds in his other two excursions, permitting 12 earned runs in seven innings of work.
Luckily , he was able to bring his numbers down against the Tigers and the Angels, but the harm was done. Keller heads into Sunday night with an ERA of 7.94 and 2.00 WHIP. He would get a enormous rush of confidence if tonight proves to be a success nighttime in the office. I’m not so sure that he gets from the one using a stellar stat line, though. The Cubs slept afternoon and holding down them like that again is going to be tough to the Pirates.
The Pirates get a date. He’s been pitching extremely well recently. The Athletics and Phillies scored only two runs in complete throughout 13 innings of play Quintana. Quintana goes to this one with an astonishing 1.89 ERA and 0.79 WHIP in his previous three outings.
It’s been five trips since he’s allowed over 3 runs in a beginning and less runs in seven of his last eight appearences. The Pirates are hitting on just .202 with 3 home runs hit against Quintana at 124 showings in the plate. The Cubs have had their own battles on the road in 2019, but look for them to wrap up this road trip with a win on Sunday Night Baseball.
