It was scary in the 8th and 9th inning for the Chicago Cubs yesterday day, however, the bullpen ultimately got the work done to secure a 2-0 victory. The night before, the Cubs managed to dismiss what seemed like a secure lead in the 9th. But a similar fate was not likely to happen again to the Cubs. Tyler Chatwood and Rowan Wick combined to pitch three perfect innings, allowing no runs and no hits. The only real mistake was Tyler Chatwood.
Chatwood has grown the Cubs have in their bullpen. Joe Maddon just has not been utilizing him often turning to his conventional relievers instead of Chatwood, that has mostly been used as a starter in his profession. One of the difficulties with turning into Chatwood more often is the total amount of work he gets from the bullpen.
After items are rolling, he is normally eclipsing 3 innings on the bump, so that chooses him out of the equation for the next moment. Maddon has been careful to preserve his arm down the stretch to the most important time of their regular season. However, after blowing what should have been a certain triumph on Friday night, the Cubs had to go to Chatwood to find a few of their mojo back from the clubhouse.
Jon Lester should get some recognition in this spot too. Lester was going through conflicts, but appears to be back on the ideal track. The Cubs are going to want him down the stretch if they wish to be playing in October. Lester was sharp in 6 innings, having allowed just 4 hits and no runs. The Cubs will turn to Jose Quintana tonight, even although the Pirates will proceed with Mitch Keller on Sunday Night Baseball. Head below to our complimentary Cubs vs. Pirates pick.

Mitch Keller will soon be making just his fifth key league start this evening and it comes from primetime on Sunday Night Baseball. The rookie has become some invaluable experience upward in the big leagues with the Pirates. It has been a choppy beginning to his profession, using a couple horrible outings plus a few that went pretty well. His best effort came in his most recent outing, since he was sharp with only 1 earned run enabled in 5 innings against the Angels in Anaheim.
In his other positive outing, Keller surrendered 4 hits and two earned runs into the Tigers at home. The Tigers have one of the worst offenses in baseball, and that may have just been a result of playing a bad team. Keller was abysmal from the Braves and Reds in his other two outings, allowing 12 earned runs in seven innings of work.
Fortunately, he managed to bring down his numbers from the Tigers and the Angels, but the harm was done. Keller heads into Sunday night by an ERA of both 7.94 and 2.00 WHIP. He would get a massive rush of assurance in case tonight proves to be a victory night at the workplace. I am not so sure that he gets from the one with a leading stat line, however. The Cubs slept afternoon and holding them down like that is going to be tough to the Pirates.
The Pirates have a date. He has been throwing extremely well recently. The Athletics and Phillies scored only two runs in total across 13 innings of play Quintana. Quintana goes to this one with an amazing 1.89 ERA and 0.79 WHIP in his past three outings.
It’s also been five outings since he has allowed over 3 runs in a beginning and 3 or less runs in seven of his last eight appearences. The Pirates are hitting on just .202 with 3 home runs strike against Quintana at 124 showings at the plate. The Cubs have had their battles on the road in 2019, however, look for them to wrap this up road trip with a win on Sunday Night Baseball.
