It was terrifying at the 8th and 9th inning for the Chicago Cubs yesterday afternoon, but the bullpen finally got the job completed to secure a 2-0 victory. The night before, the Cubs managed to dismiss what looked like a secure lead in the 9th. However, an identical fate was not likely to take place again for the Cubs. Tyler Chatwood and Rowan Wick combined to pitch three perfect innings, allowing no hits and no runs. The only real mistake was Tyler Chatwood issuing a stroll.
Chatwood has grown in the ideal reliever the Cubs have within their bullpen. Joe Maddon only has not been utilizing him often turning into his conventional relievers instead of Chatwood, that has mainly been employed as a starter in his career. One of the issues with not turning to Chatwood more frequently is the amount of work that he gets from the bullpen.
If things are rolling, he’s generally eclipsing 3 innings on the bulge, so that chooses him out of this equation to the following moment. Maddon is being careful to preserve his arm down the stretch for the most important time of their normal season. But after blowing what should have been a certain win on Friday night, the Cubs had to visit Chatwood to find some of their mojo back from the clubhouse.
Jon Lester must get some recognition in this area as well. Lester was going through struggles, but seems to be back to the perfect track. The Cubs will require him down the stretch if they wish to be playing in October. Lester was sharp in 6 innings, having allowed only 4 hits and no runs. The Cubs will turn to Jose Quintana tonight, even although the Pirates will proceed with Mitch Keller on Sunday Night Baseball. Head below for our complimentary Cubs vs. Pirates pick.

Mitch Keller will be making only his fifth key league start this evening and it comes in primetime on Sunday Night Baseball. The rookie is getting some valuable experience upward in the big leagues with the Pirates. It has been a choppy beginning to his profession, with a couple horrible outings and a couple that went pretty well. His best effort came into his latest outing, since he was eloquent with just 1 earned run allowed in five innings against the Angels at Anaheim.
In his other favorable outing, Keller surrendered 4 hits and 2 earned runs into the Tigers at home. The Tigers have one of the worst crimes in baseball, so that could have just been a result of playing a terrible team. Keller was abysmal from the Braves and Reds in his other two excursions, permitting 12 earned runs in seven innings of work.
Luckily he managed to bring down his numbers against the Tigers and the Angels, however, the harm was done. Keller heads into Sunday night by an ERA of 7.94 and 2.00 WHIP. He’d get a huge rush of assurance in case tonight demonstrates to be a success nighttime at the office. I am not so certain he gets out of this one using a stellar stat line, though. The Cubs slept yesterday afternoon and holding down them like that again is going to be tough to the Pirates.
The Pirates have a date. He’s been pitching extremely well lately. The Athletics and Phillies scored only two runs in total throughout 13 innings of play Quintana. Quintana goes into this one with the astonishing 1.89 ERA and 0.79 WHIP in his previous three outings.
It’s also been five outings since he’s allowed over 3 runs at a start and 3 or less runs in seven of their past eight appearences. The Pirates are hitting on just .202 with 3 home runs strike from Quintana at 124 showings in the plate. The Cubs have had their own struggles on the road in 2019, but look for them to wrap up this road trip with a win on Sunday Night Baseball.
