(CNN) — Carlos Ramos will not function as chair umpire for any Serena Williams or even Venus Williams matches in the 2019 US Open, also a United States Tennis Association spokesman told CNN on Wednesday.
Ramos was the chair umpire for last years explosive US Open womens singles final between Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams. Even a then-20-year-old Osaka prevailed from her idol 6-2 to win with her first major, but it was overshadowed by controversy.
Serena Williams clashed with Ramos, culminating when he docked her a match for calling him athief. Around Arthur Ashe Stadium, while the trophy was recognized by Osaka, boos rang after the game. Osaka wept.
Both players have suffered from injuries but stay in the singles draw of the united states Open women. Osaka, now the top-ranked player on the planet, will probably have the No. 1 seed. Serena Williams is eighth. Venus Williams is unseeded.
While play is scheduled to begin Monday, the draw will be declared on Thursday.
Earlier this month, Serena Williams was forced to retire in the Rogers Cup in Toronto following four matches from the Bianca Andreescu because of back trouble of Canada. A week the injury kept her from tournament action in the Southern & Western Open at the Cincinnati suburb of Mason, Ohio.
Meanwhile, Osaka retired at the quarterfinals of Cincinnati, throughout her game because of a knee injury.
Osaka and Serena Williams have performed with since that infamous game, with all the American winning 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals at Toronto.
Serena Williams, who turns 38 in September, is currently seeking her first since the 2017 Australian Open, when she was pregnant, and a significant singles title, tying her time. That win came against Venus Williams.
After she won the Australian Open, the very first player to acquire a singles title, osaka, added a second grand slam trophy before this year.
