Bianca Andreescu triggered agony for Serena Williams in her pursuit of the elusive record-equalling major crown that was 24th and won her maiden Grand Slam title.
The Canadian defeated the six-time champion 6-3 7-5 to celebrate a primary draw debut as Williams suffered her fourth Grand Slam final defeat because the arrival of her first child in September 2017.
Andreescu recovered by a fall in shape along with also a Williams comeback in the second group to become the first Canadian – male or female – to win a Grand Slam singles title in the Open Era.
