Joe Root should carry on to captain England and the training set-up should not be split between teams along with also the Test side in shorter formats, says assistant trainer Paul Farbrace.
Australia’s fourth-Test win saw them maintain the urn and a draw in the match would hand England their house Ashes series loss since 2001.
“Root is England’s best player,” Farbrace told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“Until summer his record as Test captain has been very good.”
He added:”And yes, his runs average has dropped while he’s been captain (from 52.8 to 38.4) – that has happened to every captain who has played the game likely.”
The 28-year-old, who took at the start of 2017, also led the side to a 4-0 series defeat at Australia at 2017-18.
But, his 50% gain ratio overall because skipper is far better than all but Michael Vaughan’s at the previous 38 decades.
Farbrace added:”We want others at the top of the order to score runs. It isn’t just Joe Root.”
Head coach Trevor Bayliss is set to leave his character if his contract expires at the close of the month.
Former captain Vaughan told BBC Radio 5 Live that the 56-year-old Australian did much better job with all the”white-ball team compared to the red-ball team” and suggested it’s”almost impossible” for one person to coach the Evaluation, one-day and Twenty20 teams.
But when asked if the training set-up should be divided, Farbrace explained:”England have tried that before and it did not work last time.
“I think that there just needs to be just one person, but perhaps the equilibrium does have to change back towards red-ball cricket.
“We had a massive focus on white-ball cricket, and that has been quite successful – England won the World Cup for the first time this season.
“There has been a massive emphasis on attempting to do that and it has been tough trying to win the Ashes and the World Cup in precisely the identical calendar year. And in the close of the day, the Australians really are a much better team and deserve to win this sequence.”
The fifth and final Test begins at the Oval on Thursday.
