Antonio Brown is put to suit up to the Oakland Raiders on Monday night to finish a week when a threat of suspension hung over him.
The wide receiver has been through a turbulent preseason that included a foot injury brought on by a cryotherapy machine and a threat to give up the NFL because of a row over a helmet he wanted to wear that the league deemed unsafe.
Those problems reached a head this past week, with reports asserting Brown and Raiders general manager Mike Mayock became embroiled.
The row blew up following Mayock issued Brown using a letter confirming significant penalties for missing practice sessions while resolving his helmet issues – Brown then posted the letter Instagram together with the words”when your own team wish to despise” printed across it.
Throughout the incident, Brown has been alleged to have said to Mayock”I will hit you in the face” then punted a local ball off, adding”good me for this”.
Reports surfaced the Raiders would suspend Brown, at least because of their Week One date together with all the Denver Broncos.
But, amid additional claims that Brown had filed an”mental apology” for his role from the Mayock row, Raiders head coach Jon Gruden confirmed on Friday the 31-year-old would be accessible for Oakland’s season opener.
Gruden said:”I don’t really have a prepared statement but I’ll only say Antonio is straight today. We’re prepared to move on and very excited about that.
“He has had a great deal of time to consider things and we’re delighted to get him back. I understand Raider Nation is excited about that too.”
When asked if he’d play on Monday night, Gruden included:”That is the strategy, that is the plan.”
