Anthony Joshua’s trainer Rob McCracken insists the wellness of his boxers is of”paramount importance”.
McCracken told the BBC Boxing podcast that he”understood Joshua was concussed” in the third round from Andy Ruiz Jr in June, but allow him struggle on until his seventh-round reduction.
Brain injury charity Headway called it a”shocking entry”.
“I’m not a physician and it could be that concussed is not the ideal term to have used,” McCracken said on Thursday.
“The wellbeing of all the boxers I work with is of overriding importance to me and I’ve used my decision and expertise to do what is best for them.
“There is no formal concussion protocol in which the physician measures in to assess the fighter so that you have to utilize your experience as a coach and your knowledge of someone to create a determination on whether you think that they could recuperate.
“I have had this a number of times in my career in professional boxing at which I’ve recovered from a difficult round to go on and win the struggle. I have also pulled out fighters out of fights because I understood it was not in their interests to last.”
Ahead of the seventh round, in which he was stopped by his Mexican-American opponent, Joshua appeared puzzled in his corner and said to McCracken:”Why am I feeling like this?”
GB Boxing has supported McCracken.
“Anyone who has ever seen him perform knows he has the best interests of their boxers at heart,” a spokesperson said.
“Ensuring we provide a responsibility of care and protect the physical and psychological wellbeing of the fighters is fundamental to the way that Rob McCracken has headed the world programme for both boxing over the last ten decades.”
Before McCracken’s announcement on Thursday, Luke Griggs, deputy chief executive of Headway, had stated:”Trainers have a duty of care for their fighters and it appears clear that Anthony Joshua’s trainer’s sole priority has been winning that struggle, not shielding the fighter from a possibly fatal harm.”
