Kimbrel’s extended layoff, long-term viability and past year’s poor performance at the postseason with the Red Sox (5.91 ERA, 1.59 ERA in 10??2/3 innings over nine appearances) were a number reason why teams were hesitant to register up in free agency and he’s been inconsistent this season. He’d follow two outings in July with eight consecutive scoreless appearances.
The majority of Kimbrel’s looks have been clean but he has also allowed three earned runs on three separate occasions, which explains why his inferior 5.68 ERA in 19 innings over 21 appearances that season.
Control and keeping the ball at the playground have been his main issues. Kimbrel has 11 walks and he’s hit two batters in these 19 innings of work, surrendering six home runs (one shy of last season’s career-high seven).
Kimbrel must return once he’s ready to choose the hill for them to form if the Cubs would like to make the postseason. His struggles aren’t a indication of decline in helping the team win the next Central Division crown along with a showing in case he comes straight against the Cardinals would go a very long way.
