This was another remarkable performance from Greenwood up front as he continues to reveal flashes of what he can bring about Manchester United. While a few opportunities were missed by him, he chose his target with real adulthood and it was a strike that beat a certain goalkeeper.
He scored a trendy punishment in the shootout, not showing any flash of the strain he might have been under, and he must be happy with his performance.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was amazed with their opponents Rochdale in addition to 17-year-old Greenwood while it wasn’t the complete performance from Manchester United.
He explained “Penalty shoot-outs can go either way. I thought Rochdale were fantastic, we researched and analysed them and they are a little unorthodox, but they are confident and the way it was great tonight to watch them.
“We’re through, so we’re contented with that and that’s one plus. The second is that the lovers, they were unbelievable again and the third were our penalties. They were written and the boys loved shooting them.
“You always want some quality in the past third and we lacked that sometimes. They defended well, of course we ought to have scored a number of goals, but we have spoken about it several times that if you do not take your chances, it is going to be a hard night but we have got Mason who understands where the objective is.
“He also scored a great goal today too and he’s a certain finisher but you’ve got to rememberthat he’s 18 next week so give him time and he will be an excellent player.”
Rochdale director Bryan Barry-Murphy was so happy with his side performed in Old Trafford at what he called the”adventure of a lifetime”.
He explained:”I think it was a really successful evening for us. If we’re attempting to be perfectionists, you would say we’d need to win the tie and then move through and not observe being pumped out of the contest but our lads gave everything from the beginning in this contest right.
“For the guys about the pitch and on the sides, it had been the experience of a life and one they’ll aspire to replicate as they advance through their careers.”
