Aldo Costa, one of the major figures behind Mercedes’ success, will abandon the group, it has been declared.
Costa, who was technology director moving into a technical advisory function this year, will depart the world champions to join Italian maker Dallara.
“Ever since stepping back in my function as technology manager, I have enjoyed encouraging the team during this season and have also been looking for my second challenge past Formula 1,” he said.
“After several years working in the pinnacle of the sport, I’m eager to have the ability to contribute some of what I have learned to other racing series and to high-tech projects outside racing.
“Among my personal passions is to mentor and grow young talent, and it will be a focal point for me to help attract and develop the upcoming generations of engineering ability at Dallara in years ahead.”
Costa united minnows Minardi in 1988 and became manager of the group before departing for Ferrari.
He also spent 16 years in Italy, also was one of the main architects behind the Schumacher-Ferrari dominatio, as well as being chief designer throughout the Raikkonen 2007 name success of Kimi.
The 58-year-old abandoned Ferrari in 2011 to combine Mercedes as engineering manager, also has added another 10 world championships (five motorists’ and five constructors’) into his honours, including four names for Britain’s Lewis Hamilton.

Dallara possess a motorsport heritage that is rich, and are involved with the building of cars in Formula Three, Formula 2 and IndyCar. Costa will start work for them at 2020.
