All Blacks star Sonny Bill Williams has expressed an interest in joining Super League newcomers Toronto Wolfpack, head coach Brian McDermott has revealed.
The Canadian ensemble intend to follow up in their first approach to the global when his Rugby World Cup responsibilities are finished and are watching for signings following their promotion from the Championship.
McDermott says Toronto wish to bring to do that Williams fits the bill and what the Manchester United favorite did for LA Galaxy.
Sonny Bill Williams has demonstrated interest in us thats what it is at the moment, said McDermott.
Hes currently occupied with the World Cup so that I would not ever dare to indicate that he is more than interested in coming but the answer wasnt ano once we made contact so thats something we want to followup
Australian mining magnate David Argyle has, bankrolled from their formation toronto, who do not require any central capital and that he stays committed despite stepping down as chairman, to bringing in recruits.
Our club might wish to have a name thats absolutely international that everyone would recognise and help the profile of the sport, very much like David Beckham failed for Major League Soccer, said McDermott.
But hed need to be an excellent player too, hes got to be in a position to do the job that I need him to do. There would be no player or only a player.
So, whoever it might be, you go mention that the five highest-profile baseball players – league or union – around the world and we would be interested and our club could get those.
David Argyle will resource each one of these signings.
The Wolfpack spent on recruitment following the appointment of former Leeds manager McDermott and director of rugby Brian Noble claims that the plan is to keep.
McDermott says the team have already identified key aims and will aim to finalise deals before the start of pre-season coaching.
We want at least four players – somebody in front, an external back, a back row along with someone round the ruck area – and youll find four players there that weve recognized, he added.
Weve been around with recruitment all year but the truth is those people we were speaking to werent sure whether wed be in Super League or not so well be having stronger conversations now.
Toronto realised their plan to reach Super League with two decades to spare time and McDermott says the priority in 2020 will be to avoid relegation.
The simple truth is we want to survive , he explained. You look at what London Broncos did so season, and that I thought was really nice and they gained a heap of matches, however, the energetic was that everybody around them won a great deal of games too so that they ultimately ended up becoming relegated.
Thus survival for sure is the reality of what weve got to do however gently look a bit further towards the top end than the end.
