Padraig Harrington has warned potential members of his European Ryder Cup group there’ll be”no excuses” for playing in the BMW PGA Championship next year.
Qualifying to the European group starts ends and this week at Wentworth September before Harrington takes his side into Whistling Straits to defend the Ryder Cup against Steve Stricker’s Team USA.
Harrington is delighted to find a stellar area teeing it up in the West Course this week, headlined by Rory McIlroy, and he is intent on watching more of the same a year from now when rankings on his group for Wisconsin are very likely to be picked.
“This is a enormous part of why it is beginning this week and why it’s ending at the BMW PGA Championship,” said Harrington, soon after hammering Robert Karlsson because his primary assistant captain. “This is the flagship event in Europe along with the players turn up and accept it.
“That is our largest European event, it’s the one which you want to be there. You’re guaranteed to get a field, which is not just important this season, but it will be extremely important come this time next year that we have the players playing the occasion.
“If there are positions still to be determined, every player will be going up against other good players who week and you also will not be any explanations. You can’t kind of turnaround and say’well, I don’t wish to come to this event; it’s not big enough’.
“This ultimately will result in no explanations this past year, as everybody will soon be here who wants to have on the group. And it’s a golf course that is fine today, it is. They’ve made the advancements and everybody loves it and it is a true good golf program and it’ll produce fine drama, which is precisely the form of golf course we are going to be testing the players on.”
Harrington also highlighted the importance of getting rookies on the group, together with the likes of Open winner Shane Lowry and Matt Wallace one of those likely to make their own Ryder Cup debuts.
“We need rookies,” Harrington added. “How do you have the atmosphere and buzz on the group? You want men there simply thrilled to be there and eager, and the older guys get the capability manage and to assist a young participant. That’s the beauty of this Ryder Cup, to have rookies on the team.
“Certainly you wouldn’t need to go in there together with 12 rookies and should nine rookies qualify, I will be choosing three seasoned guys. We won’t be going in using 12 rookies, but you desire a wonderful mix because it has been made by the rookies for Europe over recent years.
“Those are the guys that come out and they glow. I am hoping to get a great balance on the group, and anything I buy, the two men who qualify will deserve to be there, and it is my job to select three men to balance them out, and then it is myself, Robert and the other vice-captains’ tasks for the most out of them when we’re there throughout the week”
