Padraig Harrington has cautioned prospective members of the European Ryder Cup team there’ll be”no excuses” for playing at the BMW PGA Championship next year.
Qualifying for the European group starts finishes and this week at Wentworth next September, shortly before Harrington takes his side into Whistling Straits to defend the Ryder Cup against Steve Stricker’s Team USA.
Harrington is thrilled to see a stellar field teeing it up in the West Course this week, headlined by Rory McIlroy, and he’s intent on watching more of the same a year from now when rankings on his group for Wisconsin are likely to still be determined.
“This is a huge part of why it’s starting this week and it’s finishing in the BMW PGA Championship,” said Harrington, soon after hammering Robert Karlsson as his primary assistant captain. “Here will be the flagship event in Europe and the players develop and take it.
“This is our biggest European event, it is the one that you want to be there. You’re certain to have a very strong field, which isn’t only important this season, but it’ll be exceptionally significant come this time next year that we have the top players playing with the last event.
“If you can find places still to be determined, each participant will likely be going up against other very good players this week and there will not be any explanations. You ca turn around and say,’well, I do not wish to come to the event; it is not enough’.
“This will lead to no excuses following year, as everyone will probably be here who would like to have on the team. And it is a golf course that is fine now, it is now. They’ve produced the improvements and everyone loves it and it is a genuine good golf program and it will produce fine drama, which is precisely the sort of golf course we’ll be analyzing the players around.”
Harrington also highlighted the significance of getting rookies on the group, together with the likes of Open winner Shane Lowry and Matt Wallace one of those likely to create their own Ryder Cup debuts at Wisconsin.
“We want rookies,” Harrington added. “how can you get the buzz and atmosphere on the group? You want men there simply thrilled to be excited and there, and the older guys get the capability to assist and handle a young player. That is the beauty of this Ryder Cup, to possess rookies on the group.
“Certainly you would not need to enter there with 12 rookies and if nine rookies qualify, I’ll be picking three experienced guys. So we won’t be heading in with 12 rookies, because the rookies have made it for Europe over recent 29, however, you desire a wonderful mix.
“Those are the men that come out and they glow. I am hoping to get a nice balance on the group, and everything I buy, the nine men who qualify will probably deserve to be there, and it’s my job to pick three men to rip them out, and then it is myself, Robert and the other vice-captains’ tasks to get the maximum from these when we’re there during the week”
