Scotland forward David Denton was made to retire from rugby on the advice of physicians.
After being told he’d be risking his health the 29-year-old chose to hang his boots up.
Denton, who’d won the final of the 42 caps for Scotland in Argentina last summer, told The Times:”I’ve had this thing hanging over me for a long time now.
“Considering that the harm I’ve woken up each morning with pressure in my mind and visual disturbances and not really knowing what’s happening.
“Pretty much for this whole time that I’ve been assuming that next week I will be better.
“Each time that I attempted to go through the comeback protocol, I’d fail. I’ve tried everything but nothing has worked.”
Denton endured a blow to the head during Leicester Tigers’ league match with Northampton Saints at Twickenham.
However, his efforts to produce a return into the game was finally given the news by neurosurgeon Richard Sylvester.
Had he been match, Zimbabwe-born Denton would happen to be in contention for a place in Gregor Townsend’s Scotland squad for the World Cup in Japan.
And the No 8 – who’s qualified thanks for his Glaswegian mother for Delta – admits he’ll miss pulling on a dark blue costume most.
“The concept of never being able to run out in front of 70,000 people at Murrayfield again isn’t enjoyable,” he said.
“I so want the boys to do well [in Japan] and might so wish to be there but that is not going to occur.
“It’s very important to me that I do not look back with sadness at what might have been, rather look forwards and stay proud of what was.
“There was much more I wanted to attain. All the sudden I am unable to do this.”
