The film and television world will convene on January 8 and there are surely some peculiar nominations up for its awards this year. Here’s a brief glance at some of the greatest categories and the chances for who will win them.
Best Picture (Musical or Comedy)
La La Land is a huge favorite to acquire this planet, as this season has been lacking from the comedy section. Hollywood loves Hollywood and La La Land is the first fave to win best film at the Academy Awards as well.
The remaining noms are fairly questionable, as 20th Century Women, Florence Foster Jenkins and Sing Street are all fine films but not worthy of winning an award of this quality. The actual shocker is likely Deadpool, which becomes the very first Marvel movie to be nominated for a major award which doesn’t demand CGI or musical composition. If we’re talking from a pure humor standpoint, Deadpool is probably the funniest film of the bunch, but it’s an R-rated superhero movie, which means a big win is unlikely.
Best Picture (Drama)
This class looks a lot more competitive compared to musical/comedy, as there will likely be a struggle involving Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight.
Manchester by the Sea continues Kenneth Lonergan’s leading filmmaking that builds on fully developed personalities to drive along a compelling and relatable story. The movie follows Lee Chandler after his elderly brother moves away and leaves him as the only guardian of his 16-year-old nephew. The film manages to incorporate an wonderful amount of subtle complexity into the storyline while feeling exceptionally real.
Moonlight deals with the issue of individuality, something that has been done to death in theatre, but does so in a complicated but relatable way. It’s one of those movies that perfectly encapsulates the social consciousness of America as well as the issues growing up regardless of the economic or social level.
