A field of 19 three-year-olds is place to satisfy the gates to its 145th running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs, and with Omaha Beach scratched because of a respiratory issue, Game Winner is the recorded as the morning-line favorite at 9/2 chances. Roadster (5/1) and Improbable (5/1) will also be gaining attention, and three are trained by last year’s Triple Crown-winning trainer, Bob Baffert.
Bodexpress was the also-eligible horse and replaces Omaha Beach. There isn’t another alternative runner, so Friday morning’s scratch of 30/1 longshot Haikal because of an abscess in his left front hoof renders the Derby one short of a full 20-horse field.
The 1??1/4-mile competition boasts an elevated purse this year totaling $3 million, with the winner getting $1.86 million.
This year’s Run for the Roses seems to be a wide-open affair without a clear-cut favorite. The public choice has won each Derby because 2013, but there’s always betting value in such a massive area, particularly with a favorite that might pay $11.
The Kentucky Derby will be televised nationally on NBC with coverage staring at 1:30 p.m. CT and place time at 5:50 pm CT..
Let’s fulfill the field:
2019 Kentucky Derby post positions, odds, trainers, jockeys and documents 1) WAR OF WILL
Morning-line odds: 15/1
Trainer: Mark Casse
Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione
Record: 8 begins (3 , 1 second, 1 third)
Earnings: $501,569
Enters the Derby off a ninth-place end in the Louisiana Derby, where he took an embarrassing step at the beginning and never recovered. He’s been training well, which misstep doesn’t appear to have influenced him . He’s a minor participant if healthy.
2) TAX
Morning-line chances: 20/1
Trainer: Danny Gargan
Jockey: Junior Alvarado
Record: 5 starts (2-2-1)
Earnings: $326,300
A runner-up to Tacitus in his last outing at the Wood Memorial, Tax is a tough and hard-trying sort, and a longshot capable of outrunning his odds. Can grab a minor award when he brings his best.
3) BY MY STANDARDS
Morning-line chances: 15/1
Trainer: Bret Calhoun
Jockey: Gabriel Saez
Record: 5 begins ( 2-2-1)
Earnings: $653,710
Jumped up from a maiden winner at his fourth start to carrying the Louisiana Derby by three-quarters of a span over Spinoff. Talented colt appears up against it Saturday.
4) GRAY MAGICIAN
Morning-line chances: 50/1
Trainer: Peter Miller
Jockey: Drayden Van Dyke
Record: 8 starts (1-3-2)
Earnings: $584,140
Decent runner-up in the 1??3/16-mile UAE Derby at Dubai on March 30 among a suspect area. In his only triumph, he beat five horses. Not liking his chances one bit.
5) IMPROBABLE
Morning-line chances: 5/1
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Jockey: Irad Ortiz Jr..
Record: 5 begins (3-2-0)
Earnings: $584,140
Second-place ends in the French and Arkansas Derby to start the entire year, and they were both decent attempts. Blinkers are off to the Derby, and this horse and his connections should be taken seriously in this contest.
6) VEKOMA
Morning-line odds: 15/1
Trainer: George Weaver
Jockey: Javier Castellano
Record: 4 starts (3-0-1)
Earnings: $788,850
He was an impressive winner of the Blue Grass Stakes in his last outing and possesses three wins from four starts. This guy has an unusual running fashion, as his front legs flail outward while in stride. Talented runner, but I won’t be using him.
7) MAXIMUM SECURITY
Morning-line odds: 8/1
Trainer: Jason Servis
Jockey: Luis Saez
Record: 4 starts (4-0-0)
Earnings: $649,400
Four starts equaling four victories with an average margin of over nine spans. This man will probably be on or close to the lead, and we’ll learn if he’s the actual deal, however you need to admire his race/work ethic. He looks like a participant.
8) TACITUS
Morning-line chances: 8/1
Trainer: Bill Mott
Jockey: Jose Ortiz
Record: 4 starts (3-0-0)
Earnings: $653,000
Gorgeous gray son of Tapit overcame trouble in his final outing at the Wood Memorial — he was hit in the break and assessed on the first turn but recovered to win by 1??1/4 spans over Tax. The simple fact he dealt with these distractions and had no difficulties with traffic bodes well for him here. He can hit the board when he gets his way, but I am leaning elsewhere for the top several places.
